The Great Reversal of Fortunes

“Thus the Lord has done for me in the days when he looked on me, to take away my reproach …” Luke 1:25

The account of Zechariah and Elizabeth in Luke 1 is truly a remarkable story. Zechariah and Elizabeth are an older couple; he’s a priest, she comes from a priestly family. Luke says, “They were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and statutes of the Lord.” So, these are two God honoring people. Their lives were lived for God’s glory. They weren’t perfect, but they sought to live a life that honors the Lord. But Zechariah and Elizabeth didn’t have any children. Elizabeth was barren, which was a terrible disgrace in those days. Today, many women decide with good reasons not to have children, but in Jerusalem in those days you wouldn’t choose not to have kids. In fact, many people taught that if you couldn’t have kids you were under God’s discipline, or worse, under God’s curse (which is completely false). So being barren for Elizabeth was extremely difficult.

Do you have a deep disappointment or a deep emotional scar because of something that’s happened to you, or something that hasn’t happened to you, but has happened to the vast majority of your friends? If you do you can identify with Elizabeth. If you carry with you deep disappointment or shame, imitate Elizabeth, because she didn’t allow her disappointment to turn into bitterness against God. She trusted God to do for them what was right and good.

God sends the Angel Gabriel to tell Zechariah that Elizabeth in her old age will conceive and bear him a son, and they’re to name him John! Luke tells us, “Elizabeth conceived, and for five months she kept herself hidden, saying, “Thus the Lord has done for me in the days when he looked on me, to take away my reproach among people” (Lk. 1:24-25).

This account starts with sadness over Elizabeth’s barren state and ends with great joy and gladness over what God has done for them. And what’s even more beautiful is knowing that what the Lord did for Elizabeth is what Jesus does for His people! Elizabeth rejoices by saying, “Thus the Lord has done for me in the days when he looked on me, to take away my reproach …” This is what God does for you in Christ! He takes away your disgrace, your shame that’s connected with your sin, and replaces it with joy and gladness. It’s the great reversal of fortunes.

At the Cross, Jesus took upon Himself your disgrace, your shame and your sin, therefore, when you place your faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ, all your shame, all your disgrace that accompanied your sin is wiped away and paid for by God Himself, so that you, like Elizabeth can worship, you can celebrate, and you can enjoy God forever.

Pastor Travis

Connecting with the Community
2019 was a year of amazing growth and ministry here at The Pregnancy Center and we are so excited for what God is doing in our community and the place He has called us to rise up and meet the needs of women in crisis. We find ourselves in need of fellow sisters and brothers in Christ who feel a calling to step into ministry to these same women and we have three volunteer opportunities that need to be filled as quickly as possible.

First, we are in need of women who would be willing to be trained to be mentors in our office. This position is a once a week commitment for a minimum of 3 hours on the same day each week. We would provide training for you to learn how to take your assigned clients through the Earn While You Learn program. This education program covers everything from pregnancy related information, through parenting infants and life skills. This program is an invaluable tool for our clients as they learn to create healthy lives and healthy families.

Second, we are in need of women to be mentors on our Mobile Medical Unit. This position would also be a once a week commitment for 3 or 4 hours. We would train you to assist the nurse with greeting clients as they enter the van for medical services, helping with the intake process and being the “observer” during ultrasound procedures. This is a vital position that allows the nurses the freedom to focus on the tests, procedures and interventions.

Third, we are looking for people (men or women) who are willing to be trained as Sidewalk Advocates. Sidewalk Advocates are instrumental in directing clients to the Mobile Medical Unit and the life-affirming services of The Pregnancy Center in a peaceful, prayerful and legal way. Clients who might otherwise choose abortion at our local abortion provider. This 5 hour training will happen on Saturday, February 1 st from 9am – 3pm and will give you all the tools you need to reach the hearts of women so they can confidently choose life.

If you feel an interest or calling to be involved in this pro-life, pro-woman, pro-family work please give our office a call to learn how to get started right away. 541.772.1921
