4 - Basketball Works Hard Over Break
BOYS BASKETBALL WINS GOVERNOR'S CHALLENGE
Boys Varsity Basketball traveled to Salisbury MD over break to take part in the Governor’s Challenge Holiday Tournament - the largest holiday tournament in the country with over 120 teams from 13 states and 2 countries competing.

The Bulldogs started the tournament against Carver E & S out of Philadelphia. From the opening tip, the boys made a statement to the entire tournament and turned a lot of heads by winning that game with the tournament's biggest margin of victory, 75-32. The next day they competed for the bracket championship against a solid Hammond squad out of Howard Country. It was a back and forth contest with neither team ever leading by more than 5 points. In the end, the bulldogs prevailed at the buzzer as TJ Richardson hit a streaking David Orta for the game winning layup. The Bulldogs got key contributions from everyone and were led throughout the tournament by John Mbeng (42 points, 9 rebounds, 10 steals) TJ Richardson (18 Points, 10 Steals, 6 rebounds), Jomo Goings (30 Points, 6 Steals, 10 rebounds) and David Orta (17 points, 9 rebounds).
Click HERE for a recap of the final game's buzzer-winning basket.
Two of our Bulldogs earned special recognition at the tournament. John Mbeng was named to the 4th Team All Tournament and Jomo Goings was given an Honorable Mention. Congratulations, John and Jomo!
Girls Basketball Shines at Churchill Tournament
The Lady Dawgs ruled at the Churchill holiday tournament with back-to-back victories of 30 points or more. Our own Brittini Martin was awarded the tournament Most Outstanding Player and Parker Hill was named to the all-tournament team.
In regular season play, Churchill Girls Basketball is off to a great start. They have opened the season with an undefeated 8-0 record after last Thursday night's win over Wheaton. All wins have come in a dominating fashion and most have been won by a wide margin. The girls are led by three players who average double figures in scoring – Brittini Martin , Parker Hill, and Cat Correa .  The team has shown outstanding depth and great chemistry, which they continue to build on a daily basis. The team greatly benefits from the leadership of their Co-Captains – Kamryn Testa and Brittini Martin , and a team work ethic which has led to outstanding consistency on the defensive end of the court, a point of pride for the team.  Lastly, the team was recently recognized by the Washington Post by posting their first Top 20 Metro Washington ranking in Girls Basketball in 5 years. Churchill is also ranked in the top 5 Statewide Class 4A rankings by MaxPreps. The girls hope to build on their success when they play at Paint Branch on January 9th and at home against Whitman on January 11th.
It's a Boy!
Coach Kate Blanken also contributed to the team's accomplishments with the birth of her son Reid Theodore on December 21. Arriving at 9 lbs, 2 oz and 22.5 inches, he is on his way to becoming an inspiring member of the coaching staff.
Basketball Community Night - February 1st
The Varsity Basketball teams have been busy this season and hope to see you all at this year's  Community Night on February 1st. Girls tip off at 5:30pm and boys start at 7:15pm. Come out and support our Dawgs! Middle and Elementary School students get in free.
5 - Baseball Gets a New Scoreboard
The Booster Club is pleased to announce a donor has purchased a new baseball scoreboard to replace our non-working current scoreboard. The donor is honoring his childhood friend, Andy Ehrlich, Churchill Class of '91. Andy was a Churchill baseball player who passed away far too young and who is currently honored by his family and the baseball program with a plaque at the baseball batting cage, as well as an annual scholarship to a graduating Churchill baseball player through the Ehrlich Memorial Fund. Churchill Athletics is currently going through the design and approval process in hopes of having the new scoreboard up and ready for the start of the 2019 season. Stay tuned for more details including an unveiling event.
6 - Indoor Track

Indoor track…what is that?

It is hard to track down our running coaches, Scott Silverstein and Paul Jacobson ….mostly because they are always running, and not just on the track. Getting our team entered into meets and getting our team to meets is almost a full-time job, along with the fun things like coaching the students. Coming to tryouts in any of the three seasons is a lesson in endurance and toughness. Coach Silverstein remarked that “Athletes need to come to us ready to go. We aren’t the place to get fit, we are a team ready to compete.” Indoor track meets are made up of 50 to 70 schools with 13 or so events going non-stop. A meet can last from 9am to 6pm and events include relays, races, shot put, long jump, and high jump. This season we have about 90 athletes on our winter track team with about 30 students participating in invitationals. We will have 3 county meets and several invitational meets by the end of the season. Assistant Coaches are Wayne See and Aaron Gadson. Check out  www.mocorunning.com  to stay up to date on events and scores.
7 - Dine Out & Support Basketball and Baseball
Boys Basketball and the Baseball teams are having a fundraiser! Support the teams by dining at the Shake Shack in Cabin John Village and mentioning the flyer and Shake Shack will donate a portion of the proceeds back to the teams.
