IRS E-filing Requirements

Beginning with tax year 2023 forms, the IRS has lowered the threshold to 10 for which employers must file certain information returns electronically, including Forms W-2s, W-2AS, W-2GU, W-2VI, and Form 499-R-2/W-2PR (collectively Forms W-2), but not Form W-2CM. To determine whether they must file information returns electronically, employers must add together the number of information returns (see the list below) and the number of Forms W-2 they must file in a calendar year. If the total is at least 10 returns, they must file them all electronically. The new threshold is effective for information returns required to be filed in calendar years beginning with 2024. The new rules apply to tax year 2023 Forms W-2 because they are required to be filed by January 31, 2024.

The following information return forms must be added together for this purpose: Form 1042-S, the Form 1094 series, Form 1095-B, Form 1095-C, Form 1097-BTC, Form 1098, Form 1098-C, Form 1098-E, Form 1098-Q, Form 1098-T, the Form 1099 series, Form 3921, Form 3922, the Form 5498 series, Form 8027, and Form W-2G.

Corrected information returns are treated separately and are not included in calculating the number of information returns described above.

You can find more information by visiting with your trusted tax preparer, at irs.gov, or local professionals KMWF & Associates PC, Kuper Complete Accounting, and Dell Rapids Law Firm.

Frances Larson Photography & Prairiewind Boarding

This month, we met with Frances Drenth. She and her husband James own and operate Frances Larson Photography and Prairiewind Boarding. We were excited to offer her services at a new event during Christmas at the Dells this year. She took family photos in front of a truck parked by Willow Meadows Farm in the park, free of charge.

Frances and James moved from Sioux Falls to Dell Rapids to live in a smaller town. Frances had been taking photos for several years, but they took over ownership of a prior boarding company and brought Prairiewind Boarding into existence after completing lots of upgrades. They enjoy getting to know and work with clients through their one-on-one small business services. “We take customer costs to heart; we would never charge a customer more than we would be willing to pay ourselves,” Frances said.

Frances Larson Photography – Frances has always had a love for taking photographs and has been offering her services professionally since 2008. She offers services for weddings, high school seniors, dance, families, newborns, proms, and any other events her customers can dream up. She has indoor studio space in Sioux Falls, but is willing to drive anywhere for her clients within an hour or two. Frances said, “I love meeting people, hearing their stories, and bringing it to life in their photos. I spend time editing every single photo I take so I provide a great product to my customers. I always try to do better than I did last time.” She uploads her photos to her website so the customer can print them at a printing business of choice. You can reach out to her to book your session by email at [email protected] , her website at www.franceslarsonphotography.com, or Facebook or Instagram using FrancesLarsonPhotography. She had a lot of fun working with high school seniors this past summer and recommends any interested families to get in touch with her soon to book a session for the 2024 summer.

Prairiewind Boarding - James, Frances, and their four boys have made Prairiewind Boarding a family business. “What sets us apart from other kennels is that we don’t simply offer kennel services. We offer open-space kennels so the dogs can see other dogs and humans in the space; this eases their stress while they are away from home. They become part of our family as we play with them, walk them, and provide them lots of snuggles. Our space is in the country so there isn’t any traffic and commotion. The dogs can relax.” The Drenths provide both short-term and long-term boarding options – as well as daycare. They also offer pick up and drop off services within Dell Rapids. Boarding costs are $30/day with a $5 discount per day for additional dogs. Daycare is $20/day. You can inquire into boarding services by calling them at 605-610-6304 or visiting their website at www.prairiewindboarding.com.

We thank both Frances Larson Photography and Prairiewind Boarding for their support of the Chamber and for taking the time to meet with us!
