Current news from Holy Redeemer Lutheran Church
-- a place of safety --
January 1, 2018                 Vol. 19, Issue 1
  Greetings!

You have just received the January 1, 2018 Chrysalis - the newsletter of Holy Redeemer Lutheran Church. Please read through it for information concerning events during the coming month. Chrysalis will be published by the office staff, in this form, near the first of each month -- with special editions during the month (if/as warranted).

If you desire a printed copy of the Chrysalis you may print this email version (as with any email you receive). There will also be a few printed copies in the narthex for visitors, and for members of HRLC who do not have printing capabilities. [Note: This is an email newsletter and does not paginate the way a non-email newsletter might.]

Should you accidentally (or deliberately) delete this email, you may also find a link to the Chrysalis on our web site (www.hrlcsj.org). Go to the Member "Home" tab, then the "Communication" tab, and then click on "Newsletter" to find the month you are seeking.
After a very successful initial offering during October and November, Holy Redeemer has contracted once again with Mr. Rey Guerrero to offer both a Basic ESL class and an Intermediary ESL class during January and February. The initial classes had approximately 30 students (combined) and it is hoped that this second offering will have as many as 50 students.

Classes are taught on Tuesday and Thursday evenings in the sanctuary, with the Basic Class at 6:30pm and the Intermediary Class at 8:00pm.

Plans are, with a successful 2nd set of classes, that we will be able to offer 3 more 8 week sessions during 2018.

October/November 2017
Village House Warming Center
Throughout December Holy Redeemer hosted between 4 and 7 homeless ladies every day of the week, as part of the Village House Shelter (which was located at Temple Emanu El during December). The ladies would arrive every morning at about 8:00am and would stay until between 5:00pm and 6:00pm. During the week they were located in the Upper Room of the Parish Hall and on weekends they were in the Bangsund Room and the Imschweiller Room.

While they were at Holy Redeemer they worked on the paperwork needed for engaging with various county organizations, talked with counselors about their future. had medical checkups and engaged in crafts.

During the Hanukkah/Christmas time they celebrated at Temple Emanu El with a joint Hanukkah and Christmas tree (which they decorated with items made during their craft time). The women't group at Temple Emanu El provided some presents for them and additional presents were secured through a grant which Pastor John received from Thrivent.

Having concluded this initial effort at working together on social ministry projects, discussions are not underway between Pastor John and Temple members to see what we might engage in together in the future. Watch for updates.

“Peace is not just about the absence of conflict; it's also about the presence of justice...A counterfeit peace exists when people are pacified or distracted or so beat up and tired of fighting that all seems calm. But true peace does not exist until there is justice, restoration, forgiveness.

Peacemaking doesn't mean passivity. It is the act of interrupting injustice without mirroring injustice, the act of disarming evil without destroying the evildoer, the act of finding a third way that is neither fight nor flight but the careful, arduous pursuit of reconciliation and justice. It is about a revolution of love that is big enough to set both the oppressed and the oppressors free."
