Our Favorite Feel-Good Story of the Month

It’s easy to see why this one-eyed kitty stole the hearts of so many visitors at the shelter! Eddie came into our care in November in desperate need of surgery to remove his damaged eye. Thanks to the generosity of our amazing supporters, he received the medical care he needed and was given a second chance at a happy, healthy life. In January, Eddie found his purrfect forever home, and his new family shared, “Eddie is settling in wonderfully and is so so loved!” Stories like Eddie’s remind us that with community support, every animal can have a brighter future!

January Adoptions

The cold and snowy days of January didn’t slow down the lifesaving work at GMHS or stop happy endings from happening. Even in the heart of winter, 95 pets found warmth, love, and forever homes through adoption! Every match made this month is a reminder that no matter the season, compassionate supporters and dedicated staff help ensure our shelter pets can step out of the cold and into the families they’ve been waiting for.

2025 was a year of incredible impact at Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society! Thanks to the compassion and generosity of our supporters, volunteers, and community partners, we were able to provide lifesaving care, shelter, and second chances to animals in need throughout the year.

From successful adoptions and foster placements to medical treatment and spay/neuter, every effort helped create brighter futures for pets across our region. Together, we strengthened our mission to protect and advocate for homeless animals while continuing to build a more humane community.

We are deeply grateful for everyone who made this work possible and look forward to helping even more animals in 2026!

Shelter Pet Spotlight - Sherlock Bones

Sherlock Bones came to us with his brother, Bark Wahlberg, but these two detectives are not bonded and are each ready to solve the case of “Where is my forever home?” Sherlock shares a very similar personality: goofy, playful, and full of fun, with a knack for keeping his humans entertained.

Like any good investigator, Sherlock is still learning the ropes. He would benefit from basic obedience training and some leash-manner practice, but he’s a smart pup who’s eager to learn and do well with positive reinforcement. Underneath his silly side is a truly great dog who wants nothing more than a family to call his own!

If you’re searching for a loyal sidekick with a sense of humor, a wagging tail, and a nose always ready for the next adventure, Sherlock Bones is ready to crack the case and move right into your heart!
