Our Favorite Feel-Good Story of the Month

Bandi came into our care when she was found on someone's porch in Gloucester on Tuesday, January 14. Our medical team scanned her for a microchip and found she was chipped. The call to the owner was a response that no one expected. Twelve-year-old Bandi had been lost for FOUR YEARS! She went missing when her family lived in North Carolina- they now reside in Tennessee. Cierra, one of our dedicated medical team members, with her own time and resources drove Bandi halfway to meet her owner at 3 AM in Kentucky on Thursday, January 16. Without a microchip, this reunion would have been all but impossible. We are grateful for the opportunity to bring a family back together!

January Adoptions

In January, 68 pets were adopted and 49 pets were transferred to adoption-guaranteed partners through our Highway to Home program. Thank you to everyone who opened their home and heart to a homeless pet this month!

The generous support of staff, volunteers, and donors enables GMHS to provide daily care, cover special medical needs, foster animals in homes as needed, and arrange transportation to adoption-guaranteed partners.

Are you or someone you know looking to work with pets? If so, we are hiring for Animal Care Specialists! We are looking for someone who works well in a team and has good time-management skills. This position is part-time, and applicants must have a flexible schedule and willingness to work varying shifts between 8 AM and 6 PM. Apply in person at GMHS!

Our friends at Franktronics collected donations from the community during their annual Holiday Light Show for GMHS' Fixin' to Save Spay & Neuter Clinic. Frank Farmer presented the donation of $1,312 to Cassandra Six, Clinic Director. A huge thank you to Franktronics and all who gave to help the animals!

Thank you, Kennedy, for thinking of our homeless pets! Instead of gifts for Christmas, Kennedy asked for money so she could shop for pet supplies to donate to GMHS. As you can see, the donations take up the whole donation bin and all down the wall! We admire your generous spirit, Kennedy, and are honored to count you among our life-saving partners!

Volunteers with Langley Federal Credit Union honored Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday, January 20, by volunteering throughout the Hampton Roads community, including at GMHS. We are thankful for their acts of service and support of our life-saving mission.

Shelter Pet Spotlight - Coco

If you are looking for an active girl to help you meet your new year's resolutions, Coco is definitely your girl. This cutie has been in our care since October. She is four years old and around 70lbs. She would love to go for hikes and walks and adventures with you. Coco loves her people, and she is very sweet and playful!

In November, a stray cat was found in Mathews and brought into GMHS. She was dehydrated, anemic, hypothermic and in severe kidney failure — our medical team was 99.9% certain she had gotten into something toxic, and her odds didn’t look good. 

They gave her IV fluids and antibiotics and even went to the shelter in the middle of the night every night for a week to check on her and to give her the meds she needed. Because of our team’s dedication, and the determination of this 3 year old kitty that they named Skiddy — one week after that her bloodwork and kidney values were back in the normal range. 

Now, two months later, we are thrilled to say that a very healthy Skiddy was adopted, and now gets all the love and attention she deserves in her new home!
