GREETINGS!

by Anne Marie Rodgers

Hello, new friends! I’m so excited to be stepping into the role of your Director.

I was raised with a cousin with Down syndrome, and I taught Special Education for 9 years. I went on to write 60 novels & novellas, ending my fiction-writing career in 2020. I also have worked in nonprofit management, veterinary administration, and social media management, and I have volunteered for a long list of nonprofit organizations, largely in animal rescue, theater, & wildlife rehabilitation.

My home is in State College, and I am an active “Grandmarie” to 5 grandchildren. My husband Andy & I have spent our lives doing animal rescue work, and our current fur family numbers 5.

Working on your behalf feels like a “full circle moment,” for me, and I can’t wait to meet all of you!

FAREWELL!

by Lauren Smith

Happy New Year everyone! Some of you know that I have signed off as your Director....to begin my journey into retirement! I am deeply grateful for the two years I have served this amazing organization. This has been one of the most rewarding assignments in my nonprofit leadership career, and to top it off....I've made lifelong friends along the way!

I am also deeply grateful and very excited to welcome our next leader, Anne Marie Rodgers. The talents and passion she is already pouring into our mission & community are propelling us into a promising future. I look forward to being a member of Anne Marie's volunteer core as she advances our work...and seeing all of you out and about!

Thank you for all the love and support you have shared with me during my tenure. Let's all do the same for Anne Marie!

CRDSS is THRILLED to announce that we have been chosen as the beneficiary of the 2024 Tussey Mountainback 50-Mile Relay and Ultramarathon, and the host of the 2024 USA 50 Mile Road Championships! The Tussey Mountainback’s signature event is the 50-mile ultramarathon and team relay event that occurs in October. This year’s main events will take place on Oct. 25–27 and include 3 new events: an inaugural 100-mi race, a half-marathon and a kids’ 1-miler.

This is a great opportunity to raise our profile by sharing information with folks you know and by volunteering to help with race events. Donations to the race go directly to CRDSS as well.

For more information about the race, check out this story in the Centre County Gazette. We will need all volunteer hands on deck to assist with these races (easy tasks, we promise, no advance prep!) and yes, it IS the weekend after our Buddy Walk, so National Down Syndrome Awareness Month is going to be big and busy for all of us!

New Feature!

Our new Save the Date box gives you a quick and easy way to add our upcoming events to your calendar.

Additionally, our website calendar now has information about many activities and opportunities for our members.

Please plan to join us for your CRDSS family's activities in 2024!

While not a CRDSS-sponsored event, we want to make sure you know about "Night to Shine 2024," a prom evening for people with special needs ages 14 and older.

Night to Shine will be held on Friday, Feb. 9th at Calvary Harvest Fields in Boalsburg.

Visit centralpanighttoshine.com to learn more, register, or volunteer at this special event sponsored by the Tim Tebow Foundation.

Each year, thousands of people from across the globe attend the NDSC Annual Convention to hear the latest information from world-renowned experts and enjoy time away to make new friends, enrich lives and renew spirits. CRDSS is pleased to provide financial support for members of our community to attend. The Brownson family attended a while back and share a story of their experience (link at right).

The NDSC Convention features experts on a variety of topics that affect individuals from all ages, stages, and roles of the Down syndrome community. In addition to the general conference, there are a wide variety of focused tracks, including a Sibling Conference, Youth/Adult Conference, Kid's Camp, and more - all held simultaneously.

CRDSS will help defray the cost of attending the convention for members in our community. Individuals attending will be expected to share resources and knowledge with the CRDSS community upon return, as the Nelson family did last year at the Buddy Walk. Our hope is to provide our members with the up-to-date information and knowledge gleaned by our attendees.

If you are interested, the following links provide more information as well as the application to apply for support. Deadline - February 29, 2024 at 7PM.
