Relocation Guide Photo Contest Winners
This year, the Chamber was excited to offer two photo contests in conjunction with the Relocation Guide. Many photographers submitted their best photos to vie for the $800 worth of prizes. Each contest winner was determined by no less than 25 different voters.

The first contest was to determine the photo that would grace the cover of the 2019 issue of the Guide. Pancho Valladolid won the cover contest with his beautiful night shot of the harbor! He took home $400 to B&H Photo, and rumor has it, he's already bought some new gear, allowing him to keep taking great photos!

The same voting format was followed for the Overall Best Photo that was submitted for the Relocation Guide. Although their was fierce competition, the voters felt like the unique and fun shot compiled by Kelly Champagne deserved the win! Kelly was awarded a $400 check from the Chamber, for her Spring Flowers in Xtra-Tuffs shot.

Congratulations to both Pancho and Kelly, and a big thank you to all artists willing to share their amazing Kodiak photos! Look for the work of all the photographers in the 2019 Relocation Guide in February!
Entrepreneurial Workshop
The Kodiak Chamber of Commerce partnered with KANA to host a two-day Entrepreneurial Workshop, December 7 th and 8th. Representatives from Spruce Root, a nonprofit Community Development Financial Institution, and the Alaska Business Enterprise Institute, an arm of the University of Alaska Anchorage, provided attendees with the basics of starting up a new business.

Eight bright, imaginative and creative participants learned about formulating ideas, checking out customer interests, competitor activities and how to develop initial business plans. The facilitators shared some basic business financials such as how to calculate a break-even point and the importance of attaining the “Triple Bottom Line” where impacts on the economic, environmental and social/culture are all considerations.

Business ideas ranged from homeopathic aroma therapy to indoor, kitchen hanging herb gardens to expanding an already successful dance studio. Some attendees were strictly exploring ideas and welcoming input from others in the workshop. All participants were challenged to prepare a 60-second “elevator Speech” to sell their idea. Kudos to all on a job well done.

The Chamber wants to express its appreciation to Spruce Roots, the Business Enterprise Institute, Tyler Kornelis (KANA Economic Development and Chamber Board member) and Koniag for offering their Conference Room for the Workshop.

The Happy Secret to Better Work

What is PIKE Sponsorship?
By: Sarah Phillips

You've probably heard about PIKE sponsors if you've attended any Chamber of Commerce events or done advertising... but what does it mean and what exactly is it?!

PIKE stands for P artners I n K odiak's E conomy, and is an opportunity for our members to further support the mission and goals of the Chamber by offering financial, service, or trade in addition to their business membership. Our PIKE Members are named as sponsors at many Chamber Events, receive tickets to various dinners, discounts on membership and ads, and much more!

We have a PIKE Sponsorship that fits the needs of most members, and they are cleverly named after Kodiak Mountains! Remember that the amounts can be given a dollar donation, service equivalent donation, or trade.

Maritime Assessment

The Kodiak Chamber of Commerce was invited to participate in a brief Maritime Assessment by the Southwest Alaska Municipal Council (SWAMC), funded by the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

The intention of this assessment was to review and summarize current resources and challenges in the City of Kodiak and Kodiak Island Borough maritime industry. The assessment is prepared for the Kodiak Chamber of Commerce supported by the Alaska Sea Grant, the University of Alaska, the Alaska MAKE Partnership and Southwest Alaska Municipal Conference.

The focus of the Chamber’s involvement was to assist in performing interviews with businesses across the local maritime industry. Chamber staff and two representatives from SWAMC conducted interviews with 29 businesses covering different facets of the industry in the week allotted, December 17 – 21. Fishermen, fishery associations, boat repair facilities, transport/logistic companies, electronic/radar support companies, the United States Coast Guard and many more were among those interviewed.

Information from these interviews were combined with government and business documents, web sites, surveys and observations to create a detailed report of the services, opportunities and challenges that are currently part of the maritime industry environment that exists in Kodiak. The report recipients include the City of Kodiak and the Kodiak Island Borough, but results will also be made available to the general public.

The Chamber believes that the report will provide insights into new business opportunities as well as ways current businesses may grow to fill the maritime needs in our community. Stay tuned for the report to be available in upcoming E-newsletters.
