With 2020 behind us, and a successful season of small and safe events under our belts, we are looking forward to our Conservancy Volunteers program picking back up in the spring of 2021! We will continue working closely with MassDCR to safely plan events in alignment with public health guidelines and best practices and you can view our existing event safety protocols. The CRC continues to advocate for improvements to the Charles River's edge and better access to the parks within the Allston Multimodal Project. Despite broad consensus support for the all at-grade design and river restoration strategies, MassDOT postponed selecting a "preferred alternative," instead shifting attention towards planning the project's finances. While undoubtedly complex, we cannot afford to defer the project for a decade or more. Read coverage from CommonWealth Magazine and The Boston Globe.

2020 was the CRC's 20th Anniversary year, and as it came to a close, we counted down on social media with 10 of our biggest organizational accomplishments. Check out our posts on Instagram (as well as Twitter & Facebook).

Despite delays caused by COVID-19, last month the EPA, in partnership with our friends at CRWA, released their 2019 grade for the Charles River and a few of its tributaries. For the first time, the grading program accounted for CSOs and cyanobacteria, as well as E. coli bacteria levels. The Lower Basin, which spans Watertown to Boston, received a B grade.

Thanks to the tireless advocacy of our partners at Mass Rivers Alliance and many other groups, a bill to require public notification of combined sewer overflows was signed into law on Tuesday. We are thrilled to be one of the nonprofits that Buffalo Exchange's Somerville store is supporting through their Tokens for Bags program. From January through June, shoppers who bring their own bag will have the option of donating 5 cents to the CRC. Shop safely and support the parks!
