Message from the Principal - Stephen Garland
Our return from Christmas Break was met with the profoundly sad news of the passing of one of our Grade 9’s, Yehan Fernando. I want to thank the STMC Community for – yet again – coming together during this incredible time of need. The outpouring of love and support for Yehan’s family, friends, and the teachers that have worked alongside of him these past two years by the various members of our community was, if I was to compare it with the various school where I have plied my craft, unparalleled. I would like to thank everyone for your prayers and good wishes. They have most definitely helped ease the pain that many are feeling at this moment.

But out of tragedy I have to believe there will be some good. Instead of addressing our students and staff on the first day back and challenging each and everyone of them to take advantage of the fresh-start that accompanies the New Year I was instead imparting a different thought, and asking a very different request of them. When we assembled as a school-community last Monday morning (January 8) I asked students to take the news of Yehan’s passing as an opportunity to do things different… as an opportunity to be different… and to act different. I asked that they take the time and make the effort to find out who the people they walked the hallways here at STMC were. I asked that them to lift their heads when they walked through the halls, make eye-contact, smile, and say “hello” to those they passed. We all have an inherent human need to be acknowledged and to be known by those around us. If we all engage in this endeavour and actively took the steps to acknowledge one another Yehan’s legacy at STMC would be immeasurable!

Please include a prayer for the repose of young Yehan's soul in your prayers, as well as prayers for his family - his mother & father, Ruth and Ramesh, as well as his brother Diyon (Grade 8) - and all of his friends and family in the weeks and months ahead.

“Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let Your perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.”

God Bless,

Steve Garland

Message from the President - Neysa Finnie
It has not been an easy year for the St. Thomas More Collegiate community. We have mourned with families over the loss of parents and grandparents. We have mourned for the loss of our beloved teacher and coach Bernie Kully. We start the new year mourning for the loss of our student Yehan Fernando.

It is in these times that our faith is tested. And yet, it is in these times when the healing power of God can be most experienced - through a kind word or gesture to each other, through silent prayer, through gathering together.

Yehan was always smiling; he was a young man filled with joy. Those people who are living a joy-filled life are the closest to God and are living the Christian life God calls upon us to live. God wants us to be joyful in hope and persevering in hardship (Romans 12:12).

It is not easy.   If God bring you to it, God will bring you through it.” Gary Zimak

We keep the Fernando family, the Kully family and all the families who have lost loved ones this year in our prayers.

Live, Jesus, in our hearts …. forever.

GIVING NEWS
Knights Annual Fund FAQs

Why does STMC have the Knights Annual Fund Appeal?
As a Catholic independent school, STMC relies on charitable donations to be able to develop and offer new programs, provide up to date teaching and learning tools and resources, upgrade facilities, and address other needs of the school that impact our Knights’ learning experience and environment. Tuition and government grants do not cover the new programs, activities and initiatives planned for the school.

How is the Knights Annual Fund Appeal different from the annual Walkathon?
Launched for the first time in November 2017, the Knights Annual Fund Appeal is STMC's annual giving campaign to raise money to support "the big picture" priority funding areas of the school as determined by the STMC administration. The Walkathon is a student-led fundraiser where funds raised support projects identified by the students.

What are those "big picture" priority funding areas?
The priority funding areas are tied to STMC’s Strategic Plan goals of strengthening and enhancing our curricular and co-curricular programs. As an example, we are currently exploring the introduction of robotics and applied design skills and technology options, which would require new courses in computer programming and applied design. Such programs require the purchase of robotics kits for the junior and senior levels, improvement of our technology, and addition to our teaching staff.

We are also looking into areas where we can have applied learning that covers the spectrum from the performing arts to humanities to sciences. New programs and courses that meet the needs of and provide a leg-up for the more than 50% of our graduating students who choose to pursue a career in engineering, science, or trades; and the 30% who typically choose post-secondary business programs.

This is just a glimpse of the “big picture” for the curricular and co-curricular plans we are working on here at the school. It is a very exciting time for our students and our staff, as we not only dream the possibilities that we are able to implement them because of your generosity in support of the Knights Annual Fund!

Why is the Knights Annual Fund Appeal addressed to current parents, board, and staff?
Current parents, board and staff members have a personal stake in the school and its students. We are all in this together and we want our school to advance and become an even better place for our students. We want our students to reach their full potential and succeed as they grow and thrive while at STMC.

Will my donation to the Fund make a difference?
Yes, it will. Giving to STMC strengthens the school's sense of community. It sends a powerful message within and outside of the STMC community that we believe in the mission, vision, and values of the school. Gifts, in any amount, collectively make a tangible, meaningful, and significant difference to our Knights.

How much should I give?
Giving is voluntary and is a personal matter. We ask that you make an annual donation to the Knights Annual Fund that you consider generous and within your means. All gifts may be recognized or made anonymously. They may also be made in honour or in memory of someone.

What is the goal for the Knights Annual Fund Appeal?
The goal is 100% participation - that every member of the STMC community who has been asked to give will contribute to the success of this appeal by donating to the Knights Annual Fund. The appeal runs from November 2017 to May 2018.

A heartfelt thank you to those who have already given to the Knights Annual Fund. If you have not, please consider making a donation or a pledge to the Fund now. Thank you very much!

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR STMC HOT LUNCH TEAM

Happy New Year from the STMC Hot Lunch Team! Did you make any of these popular New Year's Resolutions for 2018?

...to spend more time with family or to make new friends
...to learn a new skill or to try something new
...to encourage your family to eat healthier foods

Well, then, we may have the perfect thing for you!

We are in urgent need of VOLUNTEERS to help out in the kitchen with our weekly HOT LUNCH PROGRAM.  We need a few more parents to come in ANY Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday to help us provide students with healthy, hot and wholesome meals during the lunch hour.

Without enough volunteer help in the kitchen, the PA will need to start reducing the number of days that Hot Lunches are currently made available or alter the program at the school.
