Three Ways to Improve your Online Business Presence
by Amanda MacDonald - [email protected]
Creating an online presence for your business can help your business stay competitive in today’s digital age. Although some businesses may not conduct their primary business online, improving your presence online can help create awareness about your products and services, attract more customers to your business, and/or expand your market reach potential. Here are three ways to improve your online presence.

Build an attractive website/update your website
A business website should be user-friendly, visually appealing, and provide an opportunity to convert website traffic into sales. There are many local website developers and marketing service providers that can help ensure you create a website to grab the attention of your target audience, while making sure to optimize the website user tools and features designed to help convert traffic on the website into sales. For example, a content management system (CMS), a search engine optimization, and an eCommerce tool will help capture sales online. Using great visuals of your products or services on your website is also key to keeping consumers browsing longer on your site.

Get found
Once you have a website, you want customers to find your website online. In 2021, Google accounted for just over 70% of all global desktop search traffic and is the most used search engine on the internet. 68% of online experiences begin with a search engine.* Creating a free business profile on Google creates a channel for you to connect with your customers, and for them to connect with you through reviews/photos or contacting you. It provides a location to input important information about your business where it is presented to a wide range of individuals.

Utilizing search engine optimization (SEO) methods & techniques for your website improves the ability for your business to get found online. SEO increases the traffic to your website by making it easier for search engines to find your website in a search, and bring your business up in the first page of results in topics related to your business, which will lead to more traffic to your website. There are local marketing professionals that specialize in supporting SEO efforts, and there are many ways to enhance SEO organically through the creation of blogs/content and backlinks.

Create a social media strategy
Creating a clear social media strategy that is aligned with your business goals and on brand will help you build your online presence, engage with your target market and reach new customers. It will also help you identify which social media channels/platforms should be focused on to reach your target audience/demographic, when to post, which SEO tools to use, creating content and links back to your website.

Bonus Tip: Digital marketing experts can support your social media plan, website development and SEO efforts. Take advantage of the FREE 1-1 digital marketing expertise provided to St. Albert businesses through the Digital Economy Program.
Digital Economy Program in St. Albert
by Amanda MacDonald - [email protected]
When over 95% of businesses in Alberta are small businesses, supporting them in a competitive world is critical. That’s why the City of St. Albert has joined the Digital Economy Program, with the University of Alberta as a strategic partner.

Through our commitment to the small business community, the Digital Economy Program will offer digital transformation support for local small businesses.

The Digital Economy Program is a free service. It was created in partnership with the City of St. Albert, the University of Alberta School of Business, Business Link, and Digital Main Street. The Digital Economy Program is open to small businesses with less than 50 employees who would like to undergo a digital transformation. Perhaps they need help with ecommerce or their web presence, social media strategy or analytics. Small businesses complete an application form, and are then paired up with a Digital Economy Program Service Squad who will look at a needs assessment and put together a work plan. Then the magic happens!

To be eligible:

  • Businesses need to be registered in Alberta (Indigenous owned businesses that are not registered in Alberta may still be eligible. Please contact the Digital Economy Program Program Coordinator directly).

  • Businesses must be considered a small business with 0-49 employees.

Tax Season Tips
by Monty Killoh- [email protected]
Tax Season is just around the corner; within the next few months, millions of Canadian citizens and businesses will file their taxes with due dates this coming spring. Below are some tips and reminders about this year’s tax season.

Tax Return Deadlines:
  • Partnership Returns: March 31, 2022
  • Sole Proprietor & Individual Returns: May 2, 2022
  • Self-Employed Returns: June 15, 2022
  • Corporate Returns:
  • These returns must be filed no later than 6 months after the end of the tax year;
  • A tax year is the same as a corporation’s fiscal period (e.g., if a corporation’s tax year ends on February 28, the deadline would be August 28).

GST Returns:
  • If your business has generated more than $30,000 in revenue in the past four consecutive quarters, you will need a GST number and will need to file a GST return;
  • Once you have registered a GST number/account, your GST return form (GST34-2) will show a personalized due date at the top of the form;
  • GST returns must be filed even if there have been no business transactions or no net tax to remit;
  • More information about GST returns can be found on the related CRA webpage.

Changes for 2022:

  • Digital News Subscription Tax Credit:
  • This new tax credit applies to fees paid for digital news subscriptions from approved media publications – up to $500 in eligible subscription expenses may be claimed.
  • For details on this new credit and a list of approved media publications, please visit the related webpage.
  • Enhanced Eligible Educator School Supply Tax Credit:
  • This was an existing credit that allowed teachers and childhood educators to claim a 15% refundable tax credit on up to $1,000 of eligible expenses – for 2022, this is being changed to a 25% refundable tax credit;
  • This credit can apply when supplies were used at home rather than in a daycare/classroom. For more details about this credit, please visit the related webpage.
  • Covid-19 & Taxable Benefits/Allowances:
  • The Canada Revenue Agency has put together a guide of all taxable benefits and allowances for employers, and has implemented some Covid-19 specific policies for these benefits;
  • Applicable benefits include meal costs, cell phone/internet service plans, computer and home-office equipment, commuting costs, and employer-provided parking.
  • This webpage provides a list of the new Covid-19 related policies, and the CRA also has a complete guide for employer-provided benefits and allowances.
  • Canada Emergency Business Account (CEBA) Loan Forgiveness Repayment Deadline:
  • The repayment deadline for CEBA loans to qualify for partial forgiveness has been extended from December 31, 2022 to December 31, 2023.
  • If repayment to qualify for loan forgiveness is provided before this deadline, loan forgiveness of up to a third of the value of the loans (maximum $20,000) will be provided.

Spotlight on Business...Visionary Centre for the Performing Arts
by Amanda MacDonald- [email protected]
Visionary Centre for the Performing Arts (VCPA) is a music and arts school that opened in 1993 by Martha & Stan Livingstone and Martha’s late mother Frances Schuchard. Frances won the mayoral lifetime achievement in the Arts award in 2015 for her major contributions to bringing performing arts to new heights in the St. Albert community and inspiring others to share their love of arts & performance.

Having grown up in St. Albert and in a musical environment, Martha Livingstone carries her mother’s legacy forward by continuing to create opportunities for children and people of all ages to gain confidence, explore creativity with music through developing programs that develop their skill, performance ability and inspire a life long love for music.

Recently VCPA won Top Choice award for 2022 Best Music School in the Edmonton region. The center produces some of the region’s top talent and award winning performers, with several students going on to sing, dance and perform in festivals around the region and the globe. Among their alumni are recording artists Ruth B, Aaron Goodwin and Marlee Scott. VCPA is proud to give back to the community through their performances and through countless charitable fundraisers.

Lessons are available online and in-person. In-person groups are smaller in size, practicing social distancing and subject to space availability.
Check out their website for a list of all available music and theatre programs, rock school, Futurefest and lessons.
