Seeking a 2026 Summer Intern

It's that time again. Head over to the blog for details: https://lakemax.org/seeking-a-2026-summer-intern/. Please forward to the college undergraduates in your life! The internship is very flexible and a great opportunity for curious young students to contribute and to learn.

You may have heard that IU's Environmental Resilience Institute provided a fellow to complete a tree inventory and planting plan for Culver last summer. This initiative - funded by the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 (IRA) - "supports local investment in the future of U.S. forests and aims to help disadvantaged communities in Indiana enhance their resilience to climate change through the expansion of urban tree canopies."

You can read the report here, which was produced by the private sector partner, Davey Resource Group.

One hundred trees will be planted in the Town of Culver this April. The IRA grant also provides for three years of watering and maintenance.

LMEF is not formally involved in this initiative, but we are anxious to assist with the planting effort coming this spring.

Stay tuned!

Last month, I shared about lake ice getting pushed up onto the sidewalk at the town park.

Did you know that big jams of ice can also occur on our rivers? The results can be pretty intense.

Learn more from the Indiana Division of Water on Ice Jams.

(An ice jam blocks Wildcat Creek in Feb. 2014. This ice jam, at least 12 river miles of continuous ice jam along the Wabash River, and 2.45 inches of rainfall resulted in flooding in Lafayette that severely damaged 15 homes and required emergency rescue services for 26 people.
