The Indiana Department of Natural Resources has confirmed a recent case of avian influenza causing the death of waterfowl in the state, with many more cases in other counties suspected.
Additionally, several commercial poultry operations have been hit by the virus. I think it is safe to assume that it is now quite widespread. Birds can carry the virus even without showing signs of illness.
Suspected cases should be reported to the DNR. To learn the symptoms of avian flu, how to report, etc, visit their website. If you do make a submissions, please let our office know.
There have been dozens of cases in the U.S. of avian flu infecting humans, including one death, so be sure to exercise proper precautions around wildlife.
