2020 Vision from the Library Director
In the spirit of the New Year, January is as good a time as any to reflect on what the library has accomplished with and for the community. It is also a great time to set our intentions for the coming year. In early 2019, we finalized our 2019-2021 Service Priorities, which are a direct response to five community aspirations: inclusion, equity, awareness, safety and education. Our programs and services are tailored to contribute to these community aspirations in a positive way. Below is a small snapshot of what we accomplished and what we are looking forward to in 2020.

Looking back on 2019
  • Hundreds came to celebrate Persian New Year, Nowruz, at the Downtown Library
  • In addition to our wildly successful Summer Learning program, we participated in Big Lift Inspiring Summers in partnership with Redwood City School District
  • Three more graduates received their accredited high school diplomas and career certificates from the Library's Career Online High School
  • In August, we announced the awardees of our Library Takeover grants, which enabled the Library to partner with community members and organizations to create thirteen events designed by and for communities of color, people with disabilities, LGBTQ+ individuals, seniors, and veterans
  • We revealed the winning designs from the Bookdrop Art Contest for our Redwood Shores Branch Library and Schaberg Branch Library bookdrops.
  • For Welcoming America's Welcoming Week in September in we partnered with Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) to hold a Bystander Intervention Training, and we held two programs during Bay Area United Against Hate Week
  • Our first Library Takeover event took place in November. Transgender Day of Remembrance was a powerful tribute to those who have lost their lives to anti-transgender violence
  • The Library Bees had a very successful honey-making year, producing over 150 pounds of honey, which the Friends of the Library sold in record time.
Looking forward to 2020
  • Library Takeover programs continue, beginning with the Arte y Cafecito community art program series at Fair Oaks Branch Library
  • We continue to design and plan for the Downtown Library Makerspace and a Co-Working space.
  • In February, join us in support of transgender, non-binary, and LGBTQ+ youth for the Jazz & Friends National Day of School and Community Readings
  • Human Library returns on March 7 with a Women's History Month theme
  • Look for our Veterans Resource Center at the Downtown Library and new services such as one-on-one benefits coaching with trained volunteers and a Veterans Resource Fair on March 25.
  • This spring we will host two bestselling authors: Laura Numeroff, author of If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, on March 28, and Meredith May, beekeeper and author of The Honey Bus, on April 18
  • A team of Library staff will participate in the California State Library's Cultivating Racial Equity and Inclusion Initiative
  • In an effort to ensure that everyone is counted, the library will provide support to members of the community in completing the 2020 Census
The mission of the Redwood City Public Library is to cultivate community by welcoming all people to experience the shared joys of literacy and learning. We are incredibly grateful for the support of the Friends of the Library Bookstore and the Redwood City Library Foundation for their financial contributions to helping us achieve that mission, and we are also very thankful to you for visiting our libraries, borrowing our items, attending our events, and interacting with our staff. We wish you all the best for a happy, healthy, and enriching 2020.
