January Lynx Lowdown

From the President

Welcome to 2026 and the Spring Semester!

The big news, of course, is that we submitted a fine 10-year reaccreditation report to NECHE on time. Special thanks to Rebecca Dean (project lead), Sue Diener (NECHE committee chair), Wendy Heath (tables and links checker), Jim Graham (proofreader), Emily Marsh (design & format), and all those who contributed. The report can be found here.

Enrollment is down for spring about in line with fall. Amazingly, staff efforts for Walk-in Wednesday led to an increase of one percentage point in enrollment in a single day, a mighty accomplishment indeed. The overall enrollment decline (~6.5%) is greater than our budgeted enrollment of -4%. The gap should not pose a significant threat for this budget year provided we control our expense budgets and husband some savings due to vacant positions.

We are beginning budget planning for the next fiscal year. A major question will be around the state allocation. I continue to advocate with the Chancellor and the Board of Trustees for the state allocation formula to be rebalanced to be more equitable.

After the All College meeting, I held a forum for all FT faculty, department chairs, and program coordinators. The primary purpose was for me to listen so as to better understand the opportunities and challenges for academics at NHTI.

Now we march inexorably towards Commencement—let’s make it a great finish!

From Business Operations

Spring 2026 credit activity as of January 16, was currently tracking at approximately 92% of last year. This is influenced by several factors, including low-enrolled course sections, enrollment timing that is not yet final, and the absence of Early College credits this spring. As expected, fewer credits translate to reduced tuition revenue, which makes ongoing budget awareness especially important.

In response, we are actively managing expenses and asking departments to remain mindful of discretionary spending where possible. Vacancy savings continue to be an important tool in helping offset revenue pressure.

Budget planning for FY26 and FY27 is underway. January and February meetings with Cabinet and academic and operational departments are focused on revenue projections, utilities, and other major expense drivers. Fee change proposals are due to CCSNH in March, with draft budget submissions following. Final budgets will move through CCSNH and the Board of Trustees for review and approval later this spring.

In Campus Safety, Joe Martin has been promoted to supervisor. The department continues to manage staffing vacancies, office relocation planning, and supplemental coverage through Granite Security.

From Faculty Council

The Canvas Conversation

We had a robust discussion regarding our new Canvas templates. Shaunna Babcock in her role as ONE-NHCC member is currently gathering feedback on the implementation timeline for all online classes starting this Summer and Fall.

  • Sandboxes & Shells: Both were reviewed as we prep the Canvas template.
  • Support: The idea of "drop-in" training sessions was a big hit—providing flexible, real-time help when you need it.
  • Adjunct Advocacy: We’re keeping a close eye on how this affects our adjunct faculty, specifically regarding timing & contracts.

Policy Power-Up

Faculty met with Patrick on January 16th to recap recent discussions. A key takeaway? The need for a Centralized Policy Hub. Whether it’s hiring adjuncts, canceling classes, or navigating the AF grading process, having a single place for written procedures will ensure everyone has consistent, easy access to procedures.

Governance & Committees

  • Professional Development: A new member was chosen for the team
  • Academic Governance: The council recently tackled everything from grading schemas and Panorama accessibility tools to Canvas training. They are also working on a system-wide AI Philosophy, allowing each school to tailor their own specific policies.
  • Curriculum: Big news—the Computer Tomography (CT) Certificate has been approved! Next up, we’re aligning course descriptions and outcomes between our mindful and standard course offerings.

Calendar Alerts

  • Commencement: Mark your calendars for May 15! 🎓
  • CFAAC Meeting: February 20
  • Next Faculty Meeting: February 24 at 12:00 p.m. in Grappone 106
