Our January Meeting

Election Impact: Protecting LGBTQ+ Civil Rights

January 28, 2025, 7 pm

This is a challenging time for LGBTQ+ people and their families. After a political campaign that often targeted trans kids, the results of last year's election mean that LGBTQ+ rights will be under attack in Washington. Thankfully, we live in a state with some of the strongest protections in the country. As we head into 2025, we will hear from Tom Temprano, external affairs managing director at Equality California, about what his leading LGBTQ+ rights organization is doing to ensure that California remains a safe haven and what we can do to protect and advance equal rights for our loved ones.

Speaker: As managing director for external affairs, Tom Temprano oversees Equality California's political affairs, strategic communications and media relations, state and federal legislative advocacy and impact litigation. Equity California is a nonprofit organization that advocates for the rights of LGBTQ+ people in California. It is the largest statewide LGBTQ+ organization in the country.

Our January meeting will include the election of board officers for 2025. After the program, we will hold space for confidential sharing and support. We welcome you at our events with no judgment and lots of love.

Note, as a 501(c)(3) organization, PFLAG Oakland-East Bay does not endorse candidates or political campaigns.

Meetings are held from 7-9 PM in the Campbell Room at St. John's Presbyterian Church, 2727 College Avenue in Berkeley (look for the PFLAG banner). Masks are optional. We ask that you not attend if you are feeling unwell or if you've been in contact with anyone who is unwell. Between meetings, our board is still here to connect with you one-on-one. Email pflagoeb@gmail.com or leave us a voicemail at 510-562-7692 and we will call you back.

In the News - Positive Developments

State Matters:

California - El Cerrito has majority LGBTQ+ city council. Four of the city’s councillors are openly gay, making El Cerrito the third city in California to have an openly-LGBTQ+ majority council, and the first such city in the Bay Area. Returning out members are Carolyn Wysinger (just elected mayor by her colleagues) and Gabe Quinto, joined by new members Rebecca Saltzman and William Ktsanes.

Texas - Odessa elects first openly gay city councillor. Craig Stoker won his at-large city with 56% of the vote.

Colorado - Denver is one of three finalists to host the 2030 Gay Games, competing against Perth, Australia, and Auckland, New Zealand, to host “the world’s premier LGBTQ+ sporting and cultural event.”

Global Matters:

Lithuania - Supreme Court declares anti-LGBTQ+ censorship law unconstitutional. The Court ruled that the law prohibiting minors from receiving information about same-sex relationships violates Article 25 of the Lithuanian Constitution.

Nepal - Two openly trans candidates run for office in historic first. Honey Maharjan and Mouni Maharjan, two openly trans members of the People’s Socialist Party-Nepal, ran in local elections, marking the first time that openly trans people ran for office in Nepal.

United Kingdom - Gay veterans dismissed from the military eligible for up to £70,000 in compensation. The Ministry of Defence announced that veterans who were dismissed from the military because of their sexual orientation can apply to have their rank restored and discharge reason amended, as well as being compensated for the discharge. Defence Secretary John Healey apologized for the discharges, calling them a “moral stain on our nation” in a speech to the House of Commons.

Celebrating an LGBTQ+ Anniversary:

In January 1993, Melissa Etheridge came out publicly as gay and proud at the Triangle Ball, the first LGBTQ+ inaugural ball, which celebrated the election of President Bill Clinton’s first inauguration. Her record sales soared following the announcement.

The Triangle Ball was seen as a turning point in the ability of well-known performers to come out publicly. Read more in Music History Calendar or a short AARP story.
