IRC is working to create a "Children's Trust" and we need your support!
MCAN Bold Idea 5 member, Meredith Egan, COO of United Way, shared this exciting news and a request regarding the plans for a "Children's Trust" in Indian River County.

"We expect that there will be an agenda item at the January 14th BOCC meeting asking county staff to work on details for a potential referendum on the November 2020 ballot for a dedicated millage for a Children’s Trust of Indian River County. For those of you working with children and families we need your support!

Please plan to come on the 14th to support this critical first step and invite your peers to do the same! (The meeting starts at 9 a.m. but when we get more details about the agenda I will let you know if there is a more precise time.) Share with your staff, board and clients, this will mean significant funding potential for community programs." - Meredith Egan

In this online summit, Education Week reporters and their expert guests will discuss the science behind how kids learn to read, as well as explore original survey data on what elementary teachers and education professors know and believe about early reading.

getting reading right
Learning to read is arguably the most important academic experience students will have during their school years. But it’s not a given.

The “nation’s report card” shows that just over a third of 4th graders are proficient readers. That’s despite decades of cognitive research specifying the skills students need to be taught to read fluently. So what’s happening in schools—and in teacher preparation—that’s making it so hard for some students to gain these foundational skills?
