What do we do with the rest of the Men?

Now that Harvey, Charlie Rose and Matt Lauer have lost their jobs, what do we do for the rest of the men? The men in question are NOT the serial abusers with deep seated psychological issues. Not the megalomaniacs with a voracious need to control and dominate women. Those men will hopefully be addressed by firings, lawsuits and G-d willing, jail time. The men I am talking about are the men who spent way too much time in front of the computers when the rest of us were learning about women the hard way through trial and error. The men I am talking about are the ones who do care but don’t know how to demonstrate that concern effectively. These are the men who are very clear about what not to do but way less sure what they should be doing.
 
We have had a client who was willing to provide 19 workshops for women to address the retention problems with women in the region. They also provided one, exactly one workshop for men (at the request of the men) to address the issue from that side. Nineteen to one. The One was met with rave reviews (as were the courses for women), the men loved it and many are still in contact with us 10 years later. One Really?
 
As sexual harassment is now the hot topic we will see a flurry of dog and pony shows, letters from the CEO reminding you all of the code of conduct, Credo, This We Believe, Core Values, respect for others and God forbid the dreaded PowerPoint presentations on appropriate and inappropriate behavior in the workplace from HR. But will it go further than that? Will there be any sustained effort over time to really develop men, their awareness and skill set about women in the workplace to actually shift the culture?
 
In 80’s and 90’s we watched as companies spent millions on other types of diversity training and nothing on gender awareness. The money of course, should have been spent on the all diversity awareness courses. But it was notable that the company had 60% female representation in the workforce, and not one female in the board room. 
 
Two executives were transplanted from the East Coast to Texas to a location where the sexual harassment and assault was out of control. They were serious about wanting to stop the nonsense. We did many sessions of Productive Relationships©, Women Moving Forward® and Organization Man Meets Organization Woman©. They fired one of the executives and leaked the information as to why since he was one of the main perpetrators. It was a sustained effort over years not window dressing with the intent of merely avoiding lawsuits and looking good to Wall Street and the press.
 
Susan and I designed Organizational Man Meets Organizational Woman© nearly 40 years ago. We have taught it a handful of times since its invention. Perhaps the world is ready now, finally! I designed Men, Relationships and Work© 25 years ago and again rarely taught. The insane reality is that organizations have tried to cure gender issues by only training women as if the men weren’t involved and the women were the problem!
 
We know what to do. I know men can be trained and cultures can be shifted. It does take a real commitment not merely a letter from the CEO and slide presentations. Please don’t do “spray and pray” one size fits all, conceptual pap. Accept the reality that men are at different levels of awareness and skill and training should be designed for this reality. Cultures are shifted by building healthy more advanced subcultures that can show the greater organization the way. Give the men who are ahead a chance to lead regardless of age and rank. Less advanced men need to be acculturated by more advanced men. 
 
We will be devoting our Advanced Men’s Course© to this subject  But some men are only ready for the PowerPoint slides. This problem requires a multi-level approach.
This is sophisticated stuff. The relationship between men and women is as fundamental and emotionally charged as it gets. There is a reason why this issue dogs so many organizations. 
 
If you have figured out that women are not the problem and men and women will have to solve this together you have a chance.
 
You start with one area, not the whole company ready to tackle the issue. If you are part of that area that’s ready, let us know. It will all be uncomfortable and embarrassing. 
 
Men Relationships and Work© is June 3-5, 2018 if you have one individual who should attend.

The expectation on today’s professionals has changed drastically in recent years.  Although the numbers of men and women in R&D, Engineering, Sales, Supply Chain and IT are becoming more evenly split, management is still predominately male. Men and women have distinctive ways of thinking and working. The ability for men to be attuned to these differences especially in organizations that still think and manage, in very traditional male ways, is difficult. Unacceptable employee satisfaction scores and unacceptable retention rates of women vs. those of men is an indicator of a systemic problem that must be addressed.
