On First Friday, January 7th, “Bold Strokes”, will open at Mockingbird Gallery, from 5-8pm. This is a three-person show featuring G. Russell Case, Jennifer Moses and John C. Traynor. Rich Hurdle will be here filling the gallery with jazz music. This show will remain hanging throughout January.

BOLD STROKES
Three Person Exhibition
G. Russell Case, Jennifer Moses & John C. Traynor
This Friday, January 7th, Mockingbird Gallery is proud to open our three-person show, “Bold Strokes”, featuring the amazing works of G. Russell Case, Jennifer Moses and John C. Traynor. This exhibit will run through January.

G. Russell Case
"Beartooth Pass"
42 x 54 Oil
G. Russell Case
As a painter and a person, G. Russell Case is one of a kind; always possessing a unique approach to his art as well as his life. His subjects are observations made during his travels throughout the western United States. He paints directly from nature to record colors and light, and his studio compositions are derived from thoughts and sketches recorded outdoors.

There is an unmistakable honesty present in his painted environments stemming from his engagement with the land painted directly from nature, and viewers may be reminded of other great artists of the west. The monumental scale of Maynard Dixon or the unfiltered color and light of Thomas Moran both find their way into his visual language. Yet Russell’s work is simple, pure and fresh. The viewer is immediately transported into a world created by shadow and light, of immense vistas punctuated by jagged mountains and inhabited by lonesome cowboys.

Jennifer Moses was born in the mid-west but grew up in Virginia. In 1991 Jennifer received her BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University. Shortly thereafter Jennifer moved to New York to immerse herself in the art scene and worked part time as an artist assistant in Tribeca. She enjoyed painting large abstract paintings just north of Canal Street.

In 1994 Moses moved to Ojai, California and over the next several years while she renovated a 1909 Greene and Greene bungalow, Jennifer explored many various types of mediums including fine art photography, ceramics and various aspects of design before finally focusing once again on painting. With a newfound focus on landscape and impressionism Jennifer sought out California Art Club signature artist David Gallup to advance her studies.

“I often find that I am drawn to the intimate aspects of a landscape; a moment, a gesture or a specific feeling that unfolds when I’m quiet. I may walk around or sit for a period of time until that quality reveals itself and only then do I begin to paint.”

John C. Traynor
"West River Valley, VT"

John C. Traynor
John C. Traynor is a skilled painter of every genre: landscape, still life and portraiture. In the tradition of the Dutch Masters, he suffuses his work with a soft rendering of light that captures the essence of nature in a quiet yet powerful way. His still lifes and portraits convey the same sense of poetic involvement, producing emotional responses in each viewer.  “Many people who own my paintings,” he remarks with a note of humble gratitude, “have told me that seeing them every day just puts them in a good mood.”

John spent his early years in Chester and Mendham, New Jersey. His classical training began at the Delbarton School in Morristown, New Jersey, and he continued his art education at Paier College of Art in New Haven, Connecticut. As a merit scholar, John studied figure painting with Frank Mason at the Art Students League of New York. He studied drawing with Carroll Jones in Stowe, Vermont, and sculpture with Brother Jerome Cox in  Florence, Italy.

“Knowing them on a personal level, I began to think that if they could do it, I could do it. I had no thought that I would try to be an artist. Instead, I knew I was going to be an artist.”
