"Where the Crawdads Sing" is a best-selling murder mystery set in the marshes of North Carolina. It jumps back and forth in time in the life of Kya Clark. Growing up in extreme poverty in the 1950s, Kya survives her mother leaving, followed by each of her siblings, until she is left alone with her volatile father, who is haunted by his experiences in WWII. Kya grows up independent, able to survive in the wilderness, and an expert in the flora and fauna of the North Carolina wetlands. Her life becomes entwined with Tate Walker, who teaches her to read and write before leaving for college, and Chase Andrews, the handsome star quarterback, who promises her marriage and a brighter future. Both young men betray her, and how she handles these betrayals will keep you guessing. When Chase Andrews is found dead in suspicious circumstances, Kya becomes the main suspect.
