The Sand Dollar is part of the Sea Urchin family, living in the ocean and burrowing in the sand. Sand Dollars have many names: sand cakes, cake urchins and the flatter species are referred to as “sea biscuits.” They have also been called “Pansy Shell” in South Africa and “Snapper Biscuit” in New Zealand. The name is derived from their appearance which resembles a large coin. Sand Dollars usually range in size from 2-4 inches. They have a strong skeletal structure called a test, which helps with anchoring into the sand to avoid being swept away by ocean waves. The velvet-like spines of a Sand Dollar come in many vibrant colors. Once they have lived out their lives, they may be found washed up on beaches and bleached by the sunlight. According to Folklore, deceased Sand Dollars are thought to be the lost coins of mermaids or the Atlanteans. Sand Dollars can be a symbol of peace and legend says there are five doves inside each shell, which can be freed to bring goodwill into the world. As we move into the New Year, may the “Sea Biscuit” feed and nurture your soul. May peace be with you and those around you.
