Redwood Coast Village

Voice

Dear Villagers,

What an exhilarating time we’ve had recently! We hope you are all feeling rejuvenated after our lively time on December 5th, where we truly rocked and rolled together on California Street. It’s heartwarming to see our community come alive with shared experiences, and we encourage you to catch up on the wonderful stories our friends have shared.

As we shift gears back to some enriching activities, we’re excited to announce the third class in Louise's inspiring art series, "Matisse Scissor Art," happening this month. This is just the beginning, as we have a plethora of engaging events lined up, including enchanting zoo lights, enlightening nature lectures, scenic marsh and refuge walks, invasive plant removal initiatives, Old Town beautification projects, and even line dancing!

For our pickleball enthusiasts, don’t miss the chance to register for the upcoming tournament at the end of the month! And if you’re curious about some magic, join Dale Lorzo at the Jefferson Community Center to learn the art of pulling a rabbit out of a hat! This could be followed by a delightful spaghetti meal to support the Blue Lake Fire Department!

Let’s continue to foster our connections, share our experiences, and uplift one another in this vibrant Humboldt community. Your participation not only enriches your life but also strengthens the bonds that make our community truly special. We can’t wait to see you in the new year!

Best Wishes,

Redwood Coast Village Team

What were YOU doing on Dec 5th

when the earthquake struck?

Marianne Morse

Yikes! I was at my desk at 1910 California Street it was WILD! The earthquake hit Thursday morning and the RCV office did some swaying for sure! It was long, too! I almost ducked under my desk, but it started waning by then.

Afterwards, the building evacuated to the street where we head-counted and except for a few little rumbles the event was unremarkable.

We're in touch with members who came in for lunch, everyone had a good story!

Wow!

Ben and Beth Winker

I was at my kitchen counter and all my devices started ringing at once, a cacophony of sounds all at once, not knowing where it was all coming from, including the wind chimes hanging on a dining room chair. Beth was in another room and she came unsteadily walking. The room felt like it was spinning but we had earthquake strapping and that held us together pretty well. New cracks in the paint along the wall ceiling intersections was our only damage. A very exciting day for sure! We were prepared from the previous cyclone with propane, batteries and water.

Patti Donovan-Skweir &

Elliott Skweir

I was spending the day with my granddaughter Elliott at her home near the Arcata Marsh when the earthquake happened. As the shaking began, I thought to myself “Wow, that must be an awfully large garbage truck passing by.” I quickly realized it was no ordinary garbage truck as the couch continued to shake as did the floor & Christmas tree across the room.

I pulled Elliott toward me, crouched over her with my chest to knees. I covered her head & neck with my left arm and my own head & neck with my right. After the shaking ended, Elliott re-enacted the earthquake for me with her arms extended & swayed back and forth, eyes wide open and a huge smile.

When I saw her the following week, she greeted me with bright eyes, smiled and proclaimed, "We had a Good Shake”

Pat Bitton

I was sitting at my dining table drinking a cup of tea and doing the New York Times crossword when the shaking started. The cats shot across the room and under the bed, where they stayed for the next several hours. I stayed sitting at the table, holding on to it - which it turns out was exactly what local earthquake expert Lori Dengler was also doing, as she noted on KMUD Radio a little while later. So happy we don't have to get on the floor under the table now! Thankful to KMUD for staying on the air and keeping us all updated as the reports came in - also happy that there was little damage or injury and the Queen of Bridges survived intact.

Sandi Case

I was standing in our solarium looking through our backyard into the neighboring property where we often see wildlife grazing and there were two does happily munching on the greenery.

Suddenly, they SAT DOWN! And right on the heals of that came our alert, followed by the quake. They knew BEFORE we did! Amazing animals!

Cindy and Ted Humphry got 5 seconds warning on their phones with an attention getting noise. Then the house began to shake.

"We were surprised by the earthquake and trying to grab our small Yorkie who was confused too and not catchable. All the wrong things . No stop and protect yourself. No ducking under the desk. Where’s the dog? was most on our mind!

We will do better next time. The dog will have to come to us as we duck for protection."

A word from the Mckinleyville Senior Center

1620 Pickett Rd. McKinleyville, CA 95519

Hello, Winter!

We are very much looking forward to embracing 2025 in the same spirit of service as we are known for. My ankle is now healed from a major break in June, and I can now carry out plans to update our computer lab with new furniture generously granted us by the McKinleyville Area Fund. We will have new tables and three new adjustable chairs to make using our desktop computers and laser printer even more comfortable for our people. Look forward to seeing that sometime in the near future.

We are also looking forward to bringing line dancing to our Center on Thursday afternoons starting (tentatively) on January 9th. Please watch for our daily postings at www.fb.com/mcksenior or on nextdoor.com for more details regarding not only our new and special programs and presentations, but also for our general weekly schedule. We truly have something for everyone at the McKinleyville Senior Center…provided that you are age 55+! See you next month!
