Donors Adopt ESR Clients for the Holidays

This Christmas, St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, Oakgrove Missionary Baptist Church, the Cycle Kings of Winston-Salem, and the City of Winston-Salem worked with Experiment in Self-Reliance (ESR) to adopt ESR clients for the 2022 holiday season.

ESR clients were adopted by the donors, who made sure they received groceries, food for a Christmas meal, household supplies, and presents for their kids.

Twana W. Roebuck, Executive Director of ESR, was ecstatic about how the community has come together. "It has been extremely rewarding to see the connectivity and compassion from the community come together through this project,” said Roebuck.

Coastal Community Action Recognizes Mayfield

At its annual holiday luncheon, Executive Director Catissa Head and Coastal Community Action, Inc., gave special recognition to Deja Mayfield.

Mayfield, now a staffer at WITN News in New Bern, attended Charles Taylor Head Start from 2000-2004, and went on to build quite an academic track record. A National Honor Society inductee in middle and high school, she was Senior Class President for the Jacksonville High School Class of 2017 and selected as the WITN Best of Class of 2017.

She chose NC A&T State University from among the 17 institutions of higher learning that accepted her, and prior to her December, 2021 graduation served as the Congressional intern for Dr. Alma S. Adams.

“I am proud to say that her education began at Coastal Community Action,” says Head, “she had a great Head Start!”

We'll share a second Coastal Community Action honoree next month.
