To seek God, and be Christ’s body in the world
Dear people of God,

As some of you have told me, it is hard to process what happened when a group of Americans stormed the US Capitol on January 6th. I don't entirely know how to respond personally, and I am hopeful that our political process will allow for healing and accountability in response to our President encouraging an attack on another branch of our Constitutional government. I do know that as people of prayer and people of peace, we can respond first by turning to our God and asking for mercy. Second we can reflect on the character of the people we choose to lead us, and what we expect of them when they fail. Wednesday's events, indeed the events of the past several years cannot be resolved only in the political sense. We must seek a moral response to our failure to be a community that reflects God's love.

If you are struggling with what happened, or are feeling alone for any reason, please reach out to me or to a friend.

Consider reading or watching these encouraging messages from our Bishop Daniel and from Presiding Bishop Michael Curry.

Message from Presiding Bishop Curry:

The Season after the Epiphany

One of the goals for the Children's Charter for the Episcopal Church is to "include children and teens as full participants in the Eucharistic community." Central to our being a Eucharistic community is our community worship.

Therefore, starting on January 10th, Zoom Sunday School will be focusing on how we worship together. In particular we will continue to explore the worship service. For example, what are the different parts of the service? When the priest is at the altar after the Peace, what does she do? Why do we sometimes stand, kneel, or sit? Where do the readers go to read parts from the Bible? How is the Bible connected to different parts of the worship service?

Pastor Veronika has already provided videos on the St. Martin's YouTube Channel - to help us better understand the Blessing and the Sermon. In this season after the Epiphany, other videos will follow. Adults are also encouraged to join us because everyone may have questions. The Q & A portion of the discussion may entice you!

Radical Grace

The Bible Discussion is each Thursday at 1:00 PM on Zoom (meeting details below). During this season after the Epiphany we will use Richard Rohr's booklet to identify scripture passages relating to the Christian understanding of Grace. (No purchase required. All materials are provided.) On January 14th the focus will be on “Contemplation and Compassion." Jesus taught us a great deal about compassion, but so do Old Testament passages from Isaiah and the Psalms. Included in each week's discussion are selections of "Art in the Christian Tradition." Everyone is invited to join us as we respond by sharing our own perspectives.
