Dr. Jamie's Health Corner - Better Sleep in 2021
Happy New Year, VegMichigan! Now that we’ve started this brand new year, we get a clean slate! Many people out there are still feeling the effects of 2020 but I hope this year is a new beginning for us all with better things ahead. I also hope this will be your healthiest year yet. At the end of each year, I try to take time to reflect and set intentions for what I hope to achieve in the upcoming year. I write down some big and small goals for myself. I think about things that have been going well and some things I would like to improve upon. I also write down any improvements I want to make in regards to my health. I believe that writing down our intentions is a good first step toward bringing goals to reality.
VegMichigan's Free Vegan Food Giveaway Continues to Grow
We have found that getting individuals to try delicious vegan food has been one of the best ways to get them to move toward, or adopt, a plant-based diet. Since we haven't been able to host our in-person vegan food tastings, VegMichigan came up with a great new way to reach people who are new to plant-based eating. The program has been a big success and we will continue to grow it in 2021. Individuals are given a wonderful sample pack including, Beyond Burgers, Daiya Cheezy Mac, a free Cottage Inn vegan pizza voucher, and other great items. We can set up pick-up locations for large groups or we can deliver the sample pack right to an individual's door. Please support this program by making a donation or becoming a member.
VegMichigan gave out more than 40 sample packs to the staff and volunteers at HSHV.

Detroit Street Filling Station Helping Those In Need
Longtime pillar in the Ann Arbor community and Detroit Street Filling Station owner, Phillis Engelbert, has donated more than $20,000 in food since the pandemic hit last spring. DSFS created the Community Aid program to provide free meals and groceries to unemployed workers in the service industry. Those who are out of work can simply call Detroit Street Filling Station to place an order and request the "industry discount" of 100%. Detroit Street Filling Station was recently mentioned on PETA's Top 10 Vegan-Friendly Small Cities list, where Ann Arbor came in 8th overall.

If you would like to contribute to this important program, you can purchase a Detroit Street Filling Station gift card here and add “For Donation” in the order notes. The funds will be used to provide meals to those in need. Thank you, Phillis, for all the great food over the years and for leading by example during these challenging times.
An In-Depth Look at Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations
As noted in October's Vegan News Headlines, Michigan’s Attorney General, Dana Nessel, filed suit in September against Slater Farms, a concentrated animal feeding operation (CAFO) with more than 700 dairy cows, for polluting the White River watershed in west Michigan by unlawfully discharging animal waste into the watershed. This story caught our attention, not only because it's rare to see a public lawsuit filed against any animal agricultural operation, but also because so many issues are intertwined in this story. Read the full report here.
