JOY ROAD
Why is illiteracy a crisis?

The definition of a crisis is “a time of intense difficulty, trouble, or danger." Another definition describes a crisis as “a time when difficult or important decisions must be made." Dear friends, the state of illiteracy in our community is causing difficulty for many, trouble for others and danger for all. An important decision MUST be made. Will we stand by and allow the impact of illiteracy to crush our educational system and oppress the innocent victims that show up to school each day? Or will we accept that this crisis is all of our responsibility?

Leadership Series
What happens when you have a CEO of a nonprofit, NFL Running back, and 80 high school juniors and seniors in one room? Magic! Absolute magic!
On January 15, we hosted our 2019 Leadership Series which featured CEO and Co-Founder of Life Remodeled, Chris Lambert, and NFL Running back, Joique Bell.

The Williams Family
When we opened up the doors to our Family Literacy Center in October, we knew we would reach many but we didn’t know how the “many” would be packaged. We expected high school drop outs and older adults to walk through our doors, but to our surprise, a mother of 8 home-schooled children was the first to seek our services.

20 th Anniversary Gala

Celebrating 20 years!

In 1999, our CEO, Pam Good walked into a school with a mission to make a difference by delivering coats; what she found was that the students required much more.

We encourage you to join us for our 20 th Anniversary Gala on March 1 st , at the Detroit Athletic Club. This event will serve as a celebration for all the children (and now adults) that we have been so fortunate to tutor over the years.

Please RSVP by emailing kmetz@beyondbasics.org or by calling 248.250.9304. We hope to see you there!

LITERACY IS FOR EVERYONE
Did You Know...??
  •  …we didn’t begin as a reading tutoring nonprofit? Our founders began delivering coats to kids in vulnerable communities and realized that the students needed much more than coats. & that sparked the idea to bring literacy those in need.
  •  ...we helped to remove Myers Elementary school off the Priority State List. The priority list is a list of underperforming schools. Within two years of our organization being at Myers, they were removed from the list. Their principal credits Beyond Basics.
  • …we can set up our program in a school in less than a week. Once we have funding, we schedule assessments IMMEDIATELY, and in a matter of 2 or 3 days we are prepared to tutor. Our testers are superheroes!
