January 2023 - Sound of Metal
Happy New Year everyone! We are so excited to get back to the movies after an extended time off. We are kicking 2023 off with a bang by showing the 2019 film Sound of Metal - Darius Marder's story of a heavy metal drummer who begins losing his hearing while on tour. This uniquely immersive film is one of our favorites of the past few years. It features an intense Oscar-nominated performance by Riz Ahmed and memorable supporting roles for Olivia Cooke and Paul Raci. We hope you will join us.

Starting this year Cinema Club is a drop-in program and no registration is required, but here is a link to add it to your calendar so you don't forget!

Reminder: Cinema Club meets in the Aspen Drive Library Meeting Room in Vernon Hills. Discussion to follow.

Here's a few articles to skim beforehand.
Roxana Hadidi, TV critic for Vulture, contributed this essay for the Criterion edition of Sound of Metal. She has great insight into the achievements of the film.

The essay goes into great detail, so if you are concerned about spoilers you may want to wait until after the screening to read.

"Sound of Metal isn’t about what could be. It is about accepting the randomness and dynamism of what is, and moving forward out of what was to carve a new life. It is about turning the page and finding a beginning in what seemed like an ending."
This NME article is a collection of interviews with director Darius Marder, Riz Ahmed, Paul Raci, and sound designer Nicolas Becker. The preparation that went into Sound of Metal is inspiring to read. Even modest low-budget independent films like Sound of Metal require an entire crew of dedicated, innovative, hard-working craftsmen with astonishing talent, and all the stars have to align to bring the project to life.

"Launching himself into a dozen different training disciplines at once, Ahmed spent a full eight months learning a whole new set of skills to play Ruben."
