The Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) is new, having only opened its doors in 2014. Dr. Gama Bandawe will share some of the stories of the journey MUST has been on in establishing a program of research to address some of the country's most significant challenges and highlight the role that UCSF has played as a strategic partner in this endeavor.
Upcoming Cultural Humility Course of 2024

Cultural humility is a core competency and the cornerstone of all global health work. Cultural humility leads us to be effective in our communication and in maintaining successful and satisfying partnerships while working across cultures.

We received great feedback from last year's participants and are excited to continue to offer a 3-hour introductory course to all UCSF nurses, APPs, and faculty. And our own UCSF nursing/APP faculty and staff will now be facilitating!

There is no cost for the course. 3 CEUs will be provided.

UCSF CGN Global Health Travel Stipend 

The Center for Global Nursing has identified funding for travel and visa costs as a barrier for nurses and APPs interested in participating in global health work.
This travel award has been created to support our community members engaged in global health efforts as clinicians, researchers, or program managers. Application for awards will be open twice yearly.

If you have travel plans for work in the field of global health sciences with travel costs between January 2024- June 2024, please apply below for consideration.

Clinical Global Health and Translational Research Opportunities in Fiji

This is an ideal opportunity for a clinician (RN, NP, CNM, MD, PA, DNP, etc.) interested in global reproductive health and clinical translational medicine and/or research related to sexually transmitted diseases. We resumed our prospective study in Fiji at the end of January 2022, after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic; over 92% of the population is fully vaccinated against COVID. Our collaboration with the Fiji Ministry of Health (MoH) is designed to determine the incidence and prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis and
Neisseria gonorrhoeae infections and risk factors for transmission to develop strategies for control. The impact of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic on STIs is also being investigated. In addition, we are developing a novel rapid point-of-care (POC) diagnostic for chlamydia and gonorrhea with a Bay Area startup. The position (housing, utilities, and transport to/from clinics are provided) is for 1 to 3 months or longer, depending on the interests of the clinician.

FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITY
Center for Health Equity in Surgery and Anesthesia (CHESA)
CHESA is excited to begin the recruitment cycle for our next Fellowship cohort starting September 2024.

Application is open from December 18, 2023, to February 15, 2024.

The CHESA Fellowship is a one-year, part-time, non-ACGME fellowship for individuals who are committed to building careers focused on advancing health equity in perioperative care. It is open to physicians, nurses and advanced practice providers at UCSF and worldwide who have completed, or are currently enrolled in, a health professional training program.

Welcome to CGN: Maddie Wong
We are thrilled to share we have added a new team member! Maddie Wong has joined our team through the UCSF work-study program. Maddie is currently pursuing a Global Health Masters at UCSF, building on her Health Sciences degree from Northeastern University. Her academic focus centers on maternal health, health equity, and the critical evaluation of global health practices. Aspiring to work as a primary care physician, Maddie aims to address the healthcare disparities that disproportionately affect at-risk populations.
Outside academics, Maddie enjoys skiing, hiking, pilates, cooking, and spending time with my friends and family.

Below are a few surveys being conducted by UCSF faculty; please consider participating if applicable to you and share with your networks.
UCSF is conducting a study “Exploring the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health and well-being of Black and Latinx nurses in California.” All nurses in Black and Latinx nurses at every level and rank are eligible to participate.
We plan to keep the survey open for 3 months. Within the 3 months, we will conduct monthly raffle draws monthly and 5 winners will receive $100 gift cards per each draw.
