Setting SMART Goals in the Workplace
|
|
Throughout our lifetime, we will set many goals and reach many goals. But the flip side to that statement is that we will also fall short and fail to fulfill many of our dreams. Overcoming this gap between success and failure lies within how we choose to approach the process of goal setting. One way to do that is by using the SMART goal-setting guide.
SMART goals stand for specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, timed. When choosing your plan, if you apply these five considerations, your chance of achieving the goal increases. The thought behind the process is intention. Acting with intent is the same as acting-wise; the more consideration you place into an act or a goal, the more unknown variables you can account for. Thus, reducing the possibility for you to hit a wall or obstacle.
In the workplace, these variables can be vastly different per employee. It could be that the task you have been asked to do is beyond your skillset, your workload is already too heavy, or the item in question has a misplaced sense of urgency. Regardless of the variables, developing your goal for accomplishment is the cornerstone for success.
Now that I have established the importance of thoughtful goals let us work through what is and what isn't a SMART goal.
SMART goals are not vague, highly imaginative ideas. Those ideas that make exciting goals are so prominent in scope that the brain tends to get lost in the process. For instance, deciding to rebuild your company website is a great goal, but it's not SMART. To turn that vague monstrosity into a SMART goal, it would look like this.
-
SPECIFIC: Consider the essence of your goal, which means taking your plan and using the Five Ws to build out (Who, What, Were, When, and How).
-
MEASURABLE: What data or quantitative measure will show progress or success of the goal? For your website, consider page speed, time spent on site, technical SEO health, and many other measures of performance that you can use.
-
ACHIEVABLE: Do you have the skill to accomplish the task. If you cannot use JavaScript or Python, is building a new website possible for you? Or should it be passed on to someone with those skill sets? What's your budget, and does it match your wants and needs?
-
REALISTIC: How will building this new website support your organization's broader goals? It is essential that workplace goals integrate with workplace policy, mission statements and create profitability.
-
TIME-BOUND: What is your time frame for accomplishing the goal? In the case of the website example, maybe you rebuild parts of it before integrating them half completed. Are six months to a year-long enough to accomplish the goal, or do you have to get it done before a new product launch?
Though the SMART goal process generates many questions, it also causes long-term success for the workplace and its employees. Whether it is a new hire or a long-time employee creating project goals, big and large, are a part of the workplace world. However, let us not forget that all our plans should also support conversation around manageable expectations, helping managers, and the understanding that the human who produces the work needs grace to do the job. Because when an employee thrives, a manager succeeds, and a company earns.
Thus, the circle of SMART Success creates, completes, and contemplates.
