CHGM Hosts Government Dignitaries in Annual Point In Time Count

ver200 volunteers joined members of homeless services organizations to perform DC's ninth annual Point In Time Count (PIT). The count is a census of the homeless population that takes place, nationwide, in the last week of January. For the second year in a row, CHGM served on the Point In Time coordinating committee, which entailed recruiting, area mapping, and volunteer training.  

 

This year, CHGM was also selected as the host site for most of the dignitary participants from both the Federal and District government. CHGM also led the Deputy, Under, and Assistant Secretaries from HUD, HHS, DOL, and the VA, and the Directors of DC's DHS, DHCD, and Interagency Council on Homelessness. Our group of about 50 volunteers and dignitaries divided up and joined different CHGM staff members to canvass a portion of Capitol Hill in search of unsheltered neighbors.

Collectively, the PIT volunteers canvased the entire city between 10:00 pm an 2:00 am. They searched streets, sidewalks, buildings, bridges, and back alleyways looking for unsheltered homeless neighbors. Those willing to talk were asked a series of questions designed to help us better understand who are homeless neighbors are, what led to their homelessness, and how we might serve them better.

 

The data collected from this year's Point in Time Count will provide critical information to service providers and policy makers concerning where to focus city and federal dollars in the on-going struggle to prevent and end homelessness. CHGM is sincerely thankful to the many dedicated volunteers who assisted in the count and to the city organizers and federal and district staff who worked hard to ensure the count's success.
Annual Tax Clinic Returning!
CHGM is pleased to host our 42nd Annual Free Tax Clinic every week from February 12th - April 15th, at the Capitol Hill Presbyterian Church (201 Independence Ave SE). The tax clinic has been a long-standing tradition, where volunteers help their community members file their taxes pain-free. Anyone who earned less than $57,000 in 2014 may be eligible for Clinic services.

Last year, our dedicated volunteers, Mike Ambrose, Rick Halberstein, Martha Huizenga, and Christine Hoffman, prepared approximately 150 returns, and they are back and ready to do the same this year!

 

We are so grateful to our dedicated volunteers for their service to the Capitol Hill Community, and to Capitol Hill Presbyterian Church for hosting the clinic in its space. Their support surely helps prevent a vast amount of frustration and anxiety for clinic participants, and CHGM is so happy to be a part of such important work.

2014 was an exciting year for Capitol Hill Group Ministry, and we are excited to host this year's Annual Meeting to celebrate our successes with you. Please join us on February 26th, from 6:30pm - 8:00pm, at the Capitol Hill Presbyterian Church, 201 Independence Ave SE. Free parking will be available at the National Capital Bank.

 

CHGM's Annual Meetings is a great opportunity to mingle with CHGM clients, staff, Board, and supporters over light refreshments, and to learn more about what we do and how you can get involved. In addition to highlighting our 2014 successes and new initiatives, we'll also give you a first glimpse of all of the great things to come. in 2015.
