Immanuel E-Newsletter
From the Pastors
As the New Year begins, we are excited to enter the season of Epiphany - the season of light! We do so this month by seeking out the light of Christ shining within our people at Immanuel. Prepare to hear stories of service and generosity each week. We will be leading up to January 27 th - a day we want to formally recognize and give thanks for the many volunteers who serve at and through Immanuel.
On that Sunday we will celebrate together all of the incredible things God accomplishes through the people of Immanuel.  Think of the many volunteers who serve in worship: the musicians, ushers, communion servers, and readers. How many quilts do our quilters create each year? And how many awesome people does it take to make them? Think of the volunteers who are teaching in Sparks Sunday School or leading small groups in Ignite Youth Group.
Community meal, Hearts 2 Care, and the soup kitchen are a few places where we have seen some powerful ministry in the past several months. We also have volunteers ramping up again to take Communion to homebound members and a brand new leadership team for Elders Rising.
Speaking of leadership, we are grateful for the leadership of our congregational council and the many...

Do you draw or paint? Are you a sculptor? Are you a lover of art and love sharing art with others? We are looking for artists to assist with our worship on Wednesdays this Lent (March-April).
During the 6 weeks of Lent this Spring we will be ‘Living in a Parable Universe.’ All of our Sunday and Wednesday worship will be looking at the parables of Jesus. Each Wednesday night worship service will include several “stations” that will invite participants into the story. One of those will be an art station. Artists and art lovers will present a piece and engage with worshipers about the parable that is depicted and share how the art was created. The goal of the process is to encourage everyone to think more deeply about the story and about how those stories can shape us into the loving and caring people God is calling us to be.
Any and all artists are invited to create an original work to present on a Wednesday night. We may have children coloring pictures on display with seasoned painters. Or, there are great works of art out there already about the parables and you could present a painting. We simply ask that your art be about the assigned parable for that evening.
More information will be coming soon. Sheri Engstrom will be coordinating with artists to assign parables and make sure we don’t have too much art on some nights and not enough on others. Our goal is to assign parables soon to give ample time for artists to create.
The Bells of Immanuel: Rehearses Sundays 9:15AM
The Bells of Immanuel rehearse on Sundays from 9:15 to 10AM downstairs in the music room, if you want to attend the 9:45 service you may leave. Immanuel’s celebrated handbell choir rings recognizable church music, including traditional repertoire, classical sacred literature, and more recent compositions. It is a multigenerational choir and NO musical training is necessary!!! If you can’t commit to every Sunday, talk to Ellen, director, about being a bell substitute ringer! Contact her at ellen.hanson@aurora.org if interested or just show up for rehearsal. You will be shown how to ring and which part to read. Its lots of fun & not too difficult!!
Christmas Cantata: Rehearses Wednesdays 6:45 PM
THANK YOU ALL Again for an amazing morning of music on Dec. 16th, 2018! Choir rehearsals will begin again on Wednesday Nights from 6:45PM until 7:45PM starting on January 9 th (Maybe) (27 th special). Rehearsals will be in the Choir Room and we will be working on music for Sunday, February 3 rd, 2019. We will be working on a choral arrangement of The Lord’s Prayer to go with the service on this first Sunday of February. This is an opportunity to grow your musical gifts and to have good fellowship with your fellow musicians and disciples of the Lord. I cannot wait to continue working with all of the incredible musicians here at Immanuel again. Experience is not necessary and rehearsal attendance is strongly recommended. Hope to see a lot of returning faces and new ones, as well, as all are welcome.
Praise Team: Rehearses Wednesdays at 8PM
Each week the members of Praise Team faithfully lead worship in song at the 9:45 AM and 11:07 AM worship services. Members also help to lead worship for special services. Weekly rehearsals are on Wednesday nights from 8-9PM! Some musical training would be preferred and members are asked to attend as many rehearsals as possible. Contact Adam Smith at (262)325-7122 or at music@immanuellg.org if you are interested in joining the team!

Our Fellowship Hour follows the first service in the Fellowship Hall on the 1 st , 3 rd , 4 th and 5 th Sundays of the month. Join us for treats, beverages, and conversation. It’s a great way to meet new friends, and to share in fellowship with others. All are welcome!! Fellowship is a fundamental need for a thriving church. On the 2 nd Sunday of the month, following the first service, there will be a "Feast or Famine" Fellowship Hour in which members and friends may bring in any treat or snack as they wish without advanced commitment. Based on who decides to contribute, it may be a feast or a famine. However, coffee and other beverages will still be available to enjoy so that all can experience what we feel is a very valuable time of fellowship together.
This counts towards your Confirmation requirements. Please email youth@immanuellg.org to sign up for a Sunday to serve!
Welcome Center Volunteers Needed
Do you like to meet people? We are looking for some fun people to be on the Welcoming Team. They set up coffee and water in the Welcome Center, greet and help connect visitors to members between services. IGNITE Middle School & High School Youth Group
Happy New Year! Boy, does time fly by. It seems like just yesterday we had the Confirmation Retreat, and now we are entering into a new year. As Kelly and I have been praying on the direction and will of the Lord for our ministry, we have been reflecting on what God HAS ALREADY accomplished within our personal lives as well as within IGNITE. We have had so many triumphs together, and have experienced deep loss as well. We've witnessed the Lord's presence moving within the walls of this church and in the hearts of our youth. We feel so honored and blessed to be in a position to guide and lead your children! God is SO good! We wouldn’t be able to do this without the support of our IGNITE parents, the help of weekly volunteers, innumerable amount of donut and pizza donations from Bittner’s Bakery & The Next Door Pub, and the unconditional support from our congregation! We’d like to encourage our youth to reflect on what the Lord has done within their lives this year. Come prepared to share when we return back from winter break on January 9 th, 2019, as we start working on our next Youth Sunday event!

  • WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 9th - FIRST DAY BACK TO YOUTH GROUP Youth Group as usual from 5:30 - 7:30 pm (Dinner at 5:45)

Wednesdays - Ignite (Confirmation)
5:30 - 7:30 pm
Our regular Ignite youth group will begin to integrate Pr. Sara into the ‘large group’ teaching time. On the surface, Wednesdays will look and feel pretty familiar. Expect to continue to have fun, build friendships, and learn important spiritual lessons. Confirmation students, on top of Wednesday Ignite, will be expected to complete Worship reports, fulfill serving requirements, and have an experience in summer Bible camp or the Mission Trip. We expect some students to participate fully on Wednesdays who are not on the ‘confirmation track.’ Our hope is that everyone will find Ignite to be a place where we grow in love for God and toward one another - following Jesus every step of the way!
We were blessed to have almost 50 members and friends of Immanuel complete one of the two orientations recently offered.  WE ARE NOW READY TO GO and looking for folks we can assist. Are you are in need assistance (or know a member or friend of our congregation) , especially those recovering from an illness, surgery, or are elderly, that unable to provide what is necessary to help them remain in their home, and do not have relatives close by to assist?  If you could you use some (short term) help in the following areas, please fill out, if for yourself, or encourage them to complete an application, and turn it into the church office or one of the pastors:
Errands, Shopping, Light Housework, Meal Preparation (short term), in home visiting or phone calls, transportation (especially for church or medical needs), minor home repairs, minor auto repairs, computer/electronics assistance and/or seasonal needs (snow removal, lawn mowing, raking, weeding, window washing).

Core Team Members: Mike Brooks, Judy and Steve Guy, Marilyn Heiden, Madelyn Killian, Jill and Bob Rosenthal, Evie Schulz and Nancy Williams.

There are certain policy restrictions in effect, especially, for financial costs of repairs, but our volunteers do not expect any reimbursement for their time. If any person wishes to make a contribution in appreciation for services or to aid in providing services, but we suggest that you make a donation by placing whatever amount you wish in an envelope marked "Hearts2Care" and place it in the offering or drop off at the office. Any donations will be earmarked to help those this ministry is serving who may not be financially able to cover   certain expenses.  You may also consider contributing a gift card from a local gas station, grocery or retail store.
Community Connection Meal
Please join us for our Next Community Connection Meal on Thursday, January 17 th from 5:15 - 6:30pm. Remember all of our Community Meals are FREE to those in our community who are hungry, lonely or need fellowship. We would also love for folks to donate their favorite dessert! Please sign up by contacting Lynn Gerlitz at 262-812-9326 or at communityconnections@gmail.com or sign up on the worship card on Sundays if you can volunteer or donate.
TreeHouse Fleece Blanketeers
Looking for an easy and fun mission project to do? Make a Blanket, Make a Difference is what the Wednesday morning quilters are all about and they NEED your help! Their mission is to continue to provide no-sew fleece blankets for the children who come to the TreeHouse! These children range anywhere from a couple weeks old to 17 years of age and have suffered suspected physical or sexual abuse and/or neglect. This can be a traumatic experience for these precious souls and the Tree House staff has found that if they are able to give them a "Lovie" when they arrive, or leave, it helps calm and sooth them while the process is taking place.  If you would like to help with this worthwhile endeavor, many hands make the project go quickly and it’s fun!  Contact Jackie Kuehl for more info. Another way to be involved is to give a monetary donation to help offset the cost of each blanket ($20 per blanket). Donations can be placed in an envelope with "Fleece Be With You" on the outside and can be left with Bethany in the church office. This as an ongoing project. Last year 300+ children were served at the Tree House...that is a lot of blankets. Thank you for whatever you can do to be of assistance to these children.
Lay Communion Visitors
Newcomers welcome to join this important ministry for shut-in members. Pastor Carl is adding new Shut-Ins to the list as he visits them. Please contact Jeri Bozovsky at 203-5400 for more info.   Also, if you have names of members who have indicated they would be in need of a visit please let Jeri B. or Bethany know and they will be added to the list of people enjoying visits from this wonderful ministry.
Tree House
THANK YOU to everyone who contributed hams, turkeys, helped with a Christmas family this year and for your continued support and prayers. There were over 100 hams and turkeys donated for Thanksgiving and Christmas Dinners. A record number 37 families were blessed to receive much needed Christmas clothes and surprises by the generosity of not only Immanuel members but by numerous other faith communities throughout the county.
Immanuel supports the Tree House throughout the year in many ways: the making of adorable flannel blanket that each child receives when coming for an interview at the tree house as well as darling handmade pillow cases (some children didn't know what these were as they have never had a pillow one, can you believe that?) A much needed diaper drive was also conducted, snacks and little toys collected in our Tree House bin, winter hats, headbands and personal care, just to name a few..
I am so grateful for the outpouring of generosity and compassion that comes from our congregation. Thank you for all you do and all you continue to do to help children and their families who suffer the effects of abuse. God bless you! Evie Schulz
St. Vincent De Paul (Milwaukee) Soup Kitchen

During our time ringing, Immanuel collected $6,871.84. With the help of other churches and organizations, we collected $21,721.36 to be used for needy individuals and families in Walworth County throughout the year. In addition, Mobil Oil (Bill's former employer) donated $500 to the Salvation Army for our volunteer work. This year we again asked for "Weekend Coordinators" to put out the kettles in the morning, exchange them around 1pm, collect them at night and deposit the money in the bank. MANY THANKS to those of you who took on this time-consuming job - Mike & Sandy Boales, Steve & Judy Guy, Ken & Ursula Field, Dick & Kathy Heuvelman, and Phil & Donna Neimeyer. They lighten the load for us. We couldn't have done it without them. Together we will be able to make a difference this coming year in the lives of those in need of emergency help. THANKS for your heart to care!
Sincerely, Georgia and Bill Gehrmann
