We hope that everyone enjoyed a healthy and happy holiday with their families. Additionally, we wish you great success in 2011.

The OMBAC rugby team has been training hard over the past month. Practices have been physical and the team continues to grow. Numbers are up and trainings are extremely competitive with many players competing for starting roles. All the players are looking forward to league matches in January.

Inside the January newsletter you will find information about upcoming events, Legends news, news from our youth side and much more. If you have information you would like included in upcoming newsletters please contact Ethan Willis ethanleewillis@gmail.com.

We Catch Up with Mike Saunders

Mike and his family

Each month we will feature information from an OMBAC Legend and find out what they have been up to since their playing days ended at OMBAC. This month we feature Mike Saunders. If you know of anyone we should feature please reach out to us!

What years did you play for OMBAC: 1983-1993 I am enormously proud to say I played for OMBAC

Where do you reside now: Boise, Idaho

What position did you play: #9

What are you currently doing for an occupation: Mortgage business

Do you have a wife/children: Yes both, my wife is Lynne and my daughter is Madeline (15).

Are you currently affiliated with any rugby team: Yes, Snake River Rugby Club. I have coached the side since 1993. I also coached the US Sevens Team, Pacific Coast Grizzlies and assisted with the NA 4. I have also been involved with youth rugby in Idaho.

What is your favorite memory of your time with OMBAC: Certainly the championships were great! The tours were a blast! But the true memories lie with the friendships made, the players and staff from those years are still my dearest friends.

What do you miss most from your playing days with OMBAC: The guys ( I miss jingle/jangles the least!)! We had a special camaraderie that is tough to duplicate.

How did OMBAC Rugby shape who you are today: In many ways. It helped the most with my leadership skills. While Bing certainly put a structure around our play he relied on the senior players to lead, implement and execute the plan.

If you could go back and change anything from your playing days with OMBAC what would it be: I wish we had worked on developing facilities.

Who is going to win next year's Rugby World Cup: The Eagles!

chief Legends Networking Breakfast

January 18th at Old Town Mexican Cafe

Attention Legends:

We are kicking off the 2011 Legends Networking Breakfast on January 18th (3rd Tuesday of every month) at Old Town Mexican Cafe. Breakfast will be served at 7:30 am and our meeting will start at 8:00 am sharp. It will conclude by 9:00 am so that everyone can get out to start their day.

Topics covered in the meeting will include Legends' Vegas trip, OMBAC's new coach and ideas for fundraising for the club. We hope you'll want to attend as it has been a great way to stay connected with the club. Mike and I have goals of making the Legend's an exciting and rewarding experience. We also have goals of finding ways to give back to the club & the sport of rugby.

Legends Gather to Play in Invitational

From the Desk of Clark Bernales:

Come celebrate and re-live the greatness that was the 1991 OMBAC National Championship XVs season. Next year marks the 20th anniversary of the 1991's teams glorious achievement.  It's also the 15th year mark for the '96 team Div1 championship (last before RSL was created) and the 5th year mark for the 2006 teams when we brought home both the RSL and 7s titles.  We will enter a team in the Masters Division of the Las Vegas Invitational being run by some dude named Hinkin. Afterwards it will be a night of recognition, reminiscing, and revelry. Anyone who was at the event similar to what we did for the 1985 Sevens Team can attest to how much fun we had.

Participation in the LVI tournament is open to anyone who played for OMBAC on the 1991 team or has donned the OMBAC jersey and meets Old Boy eligibility (35yrs or older, male, & can touch their toes...). This event will be held in conjunction with 2011 USA Sevens Las Vegas IRB Series event Feb 12th & 13th - which is also run by some dude named Hinkin and another bloak named Dan.  We are currently on the books for one game on Friday vs. Connecticut Yankees. If we get more numbers we can request a 2nd match.

Those who have indicated they'd be available include:

Sean Allen, Rick Crivellone (injured), Frank Zugovitz (injured), Troy Donoghue (if no conflict w/ current squad),
Ghian Snyman (50-50), Eric Stewart, Mike Tanghe,

Anthony "Cholla" Tarra, Mika McLeod, Tim Lucey, Tim O'Hara,

Mike Murphy, Tai Vakatale, Casey Hadges, Jason McVeigh,

Bryan Watts, Kevin Kujawa, Graham Basher Downes, Matt Heasley,
Dave Long, Glenn Irvine, Jason Raven, Kelly Dolan,
Bill Chief Leversee, Ruben Spilkin, Geno Mazza, Andy Katoa

crazy Youth News

The OMBAC Wallabies Continue to Grow

The OMBAC Wallabies Youth Rugby season kicked off with a pre-season game on December 18th. The youth program has grown again for its fifth straight year and now has more than 80 kids from ages 4 to 14 developing their skills.

The first round of the Southern California competition for the youth side is this Saturday, January 8th at the Little Q. Additionally, you can come watch the kids play at home games on Saturday, January 15th vs the Aztecs, and Saturday, February 5th vs Poway.

We would love to have Senior OMBAC Rugby players, Legends and friends come out and support the kids. The day starts with the Under 8 age group at 9am followed by Under 10 and Under 12. The youth games culminate at 11:30am when the Under 14 age group plays.

A number of OMBAC coaches and players have joined in the fun and volunteered their time with the kids. A special thanks to Geno Mazza, Joe Welch, Chris Clever, Mark Ivers, Guy Johnson and Jason Raven.

Del Chipman's Son Scores Four Tries

Del Chipman was one of OMBAC's key players when we won our first ever national championship - the 1985 National 7s Club title. This past weekend, Del's son, Matt Chipman, a senior at Jesuit High School in Sacramento, scored four tries for the United States High School All-American team in their 44-29 victory over the Canada U17 team.
