Black History Month is a time to honor the history, resilience, and contributions of Black individuals and communities, while also reflecting on our shared responsibility to advance equity and belonging.

At Tahoma Northwest, this observance aligns with our commitment to inclusive, person-centered services. We recognize that promoting well-being means working alongside communities, listening to lived experiences, and addressing inequities that impact access, connection, and opportunity.

By centering equity in our work, we strive to foster resilience, strengthen supports, and empower individuals and families to thrive.

Ways to support Black history and Black communities:

  • Learn about Black history in Washington State, including local leaders, neighborhoods, and movements that have shaped our communities.
  • Support Black-owned businesses, service providers, and artists throughout the state.
  • Attend local events, workshops, exhibits, or cultural celebrations that uplift Black voices and experiences.
  • Donate to or volunteer with Black-led organizations that promote health, education, housing, and community well-being.
  • Engage in conversations about equity, inclusion, and anti-racism within your workplace and community.
  • Seek out books, films, podcasts, and trainings created by Black educators and advocates, especially those reflecting local perspectives.
  • Reflect on how your daily actions and professional practice can help strengthen supports, promote dignity, and advance equity for Black individuals and families.

Celebrating Valentine’s Day Through Self-Care and Self-Love

Valentine’s Day is often associated with romantic relationships, but it can also be a powerful opportunity to turn inward and prioritize yourself. Practicing self-care on Valentine’s Day is a meaningful way to honor your well-being, celebrate your strengths, and reconnect with what brings you joy.

Self-Care Activities to Embrace

  • Pamper Yourself
  • Create a spa-like experience at home.
  • Start the Day with Intention
  • Begin your morning with a self-care ritual that sets a positive tone.
  • Engage in Creative Outlets
  • Expressing yourself creatively can be both therapeutic and empowering.
  • Disconnect from Technology
  • Step away from social media and digital distractions for part of the day.
  • Treat Yourself to Your Favorite Meal
  • Practice Self-Love Affirmations
  • Take a moment to stand in front of the mirror and speak kindly to yourself.
  • Create a Self-Care Ritual Planner
  • Write down self-care activities you enjoy and intentionally schedule them into your day.
  • Write a Love Letter to Yourself
  • Reflect on your journey and express gratitude for your growth, resilience, and achievements.

By dedicating Valentine’s Day to self-care, you nurture both your mind and body while reaffirming that love begins with yourself. However you choose to celebrate, may the day be filled with moments that bring peace, joy, and fulfillment.
