Contemporary Applications of Two-Eyed Seeing

Co-sponsored by Coyote Institute, the Native Studies Program, the Intermedia Program, and the Medical Arts and Humanities Program of the University of Maine at Orono.
For three days, in this hybrid conference, we will celebrate M'iqmaq elder Albert Marshall and his concept of two-eyed seeing which originated at Cape Breton University and Eskasoni First Nation. Two-eyed seeing establishes the equal validity of indigenous knowledge and ways of knowing to contemporary scientific knowledge as we explore wellbeing.
This event will be hydrid -- both online and face-to-face.

The Healing Power of Stories

In this workshop, we will explore stories about resolving grief, learning humility, managing relationships, managing anger, and more. We will focus on the healing power of the story from the extremes of lifelong trauma to the joys and diversion of Indigenous humor as exemplified by Coyote (trickster), an agent of conscious change and transformation.

In many cultures and civilizations, certain individuals were singled out as “visionaries”. They were considered to have a special gift or ability. Their village or tribe would honor what they brought back from excursions into altered states, where they had access to realities outside of the present moment. These visions were then used to guide individuals or groups in making important decisions (where to live, hunt, plant, build, worship, etc.)
Now, let us consider this: We are all visionaries. Each and every person has visions of potential futures, visions of their ancestors, visions of aspects of themselves. The practice of Haŋbléčeyapi – Crying for a Vision, one of the Lakota seven Sacred Rites, has been adopted by numerous spiritual aspirants in our 21st century “global village”. In its original, pure form, Haŋbléčeyapi is undertaken by an individual with the help and guidance of a holy man. A person elects to go on a vision quest to pray, communicate with spirits, and attempt to gain knowledge, strength, and understanding. The person pledges to stay on an isolated hill for one to four days with a blanket and pipe, but without food or water.
In this post-modern world we live in, as many seek guidance from within/above - spirit realm, are there other, less extreme rituals and ceremonies that are conducive to receiving clear visions? In these three days of gathering in community, we will be exploring how to prepare ourselves to receive visions, and how we can facilitate this process for ourselves and others.
This event will be held at the beautiful and welcoming retreat center of The Eskffnest, located on 23 acres of wooded mountainside in Woodstock, NY. There will be a community revitalization lodge (April 24), and other activities, such as interactive storytelling, guided meditations, creative arts therapy, drumming, and dancing. We invite the spirit of Coyote to help us improve our vision. In addition, those who are already working with pre-existing visions will have the opportunity to examine them and, if necessary, revise them (re-visioning).
The suggested donation is $375, which includes a post-lodge shared pot-luck dinner.
Tiered lodging is available for a separate fee (includes dorm-style, private, and semi-private rooms, as well as tent camping).
