Mental illness is becoming increasingly common among teenagers throughout the United States and globally. Recent studies indicate the following:
-
1 in 5 teens in the United States will experience a mental health challenge by the time they are 18. (SAMHSA, 2021)
-
Suicide is the third-leading cause of death among youth ages 15-19. (CDC, 2020)
-
64% of teens in the United States who experience mental health challenges don't seek help. (SAMHSA, 2021)
As part of our 2024 program, we will expand Mental Health support to include Teen Mental Health FIRST AID (tMHFA). A Peer-To-Peer Support program through the National Alliance For Mental Wellbeing.
Audience: High school teens; Grades 10 – 12; Ages 15-18
Adolescence is a time of critical change and development, and the time when mental health challenges may first emerge. Those challenges may be the cause for failing grades, problems with close relationships and substance use. Take comfort knowing that your teens will be prepared to provide support for their peers as well as better cope with mental health challenges themselves -- and get assistance from a trusted adult.
