Life's most persistent and urgent question is,

'What are you doing for others?'

Martin Luther King, Jr.

Dear Alex,

JHI is a year old and what an incredible year it has been!

We provided critical care for three patients, identified others whose cases are under hospital review, created a Board, established a 3-year strategic plan and began fundraising efforts to help provide care to more patients in the next year.

Most of all, JHI is grateful and thankful to all of you for your support, prayers and financial contributions.

With the generosity of so many, the JHI year-end appeal raised more than $42,000, and matched to make twice the impact. This support will help JHI provide life-saving care for patients like Simplisa and Moses, who's stories are below, as well as others being identified for help in 2023.

JHI 2022 Recap

  • Jan-Feb: Alex and a core team began strategic planning, as the project of building JHI got underway
  • Mar: After many late nights and collaboration, the JHI website was launched!
  • April: JHI welcomed its first patient Simplisa and her Mom Sandrine for treatment at Shriners Hospital in Boston MA.
  • May: JHI fundraising began in earnest and the Board was established
  • June: The esteemed Fragomen Law Firm, specializing in immigration matters, partnered with JHI to help patients in applying for a medical visa. Simplisa had her second surgery.
  • July: Award winning cinematographer, Taylor de Lench began documenting Simplisa's story.
  • Aug: JHI's website got its first update in preparation for the announcement of it's inaugural strategic plan and budget.
  • Sept: The JHI Board held its first open meeting inviting people to learn more about JHI’s mission and to become involved in patient selection, marketing, fundraising and strategic committees.
  • Oct: JHI's first year-end appeal began with matching funds from a generous supporter.
  • Nov: JHI welcomed its second patient, Moses and his Mom Annie for treatment at Shriners hospital
  • Dec: Simplisa and Moses both had successful treatments, and the JHI staff joined them to celebrate Christmas. And, thanks to generous supporters, the JHI year-end appeal was a success and has established a strong foothold for future efforts.
  • Jan 2023: The New Year has already brought significant events as Moses successfully completed treatment. And after some fun on their last day with Alex, he and his Mom flew home on January 12th.

With a full year already past, JHI’s future goals are ambitious and fueled by the knowledge that so many children are out there in need of life-saving treatment.

With Love,

Alex

JHI in Action. Moses went Home!

Moses Masala is from Lusaka, Zambia. He was severely burned at the age of 10 while playing at a neighbor's house. His burns healed, but he unfortunately developed hypertrophic scars and other challenges that needed advanced medical intervention.

Arriving in November, Moses received treatment at Shriners Children's Boston, where the surgeons performed a graft on his neck and chin, and laser treatment on his chest. With the generosity of his host family, and despite the pain and discomfort, Moses successfully completed treatment and flew home with his Mom in January.
