Beating the Winter Blues: Small Daily Habits to

Improve Emotional Wellness

The winter months can significantly affect our emotional wellbeing. Reduced sunlight exposure disrupts our circadian rhythms and decreases serotonin production, a neurotransmitter that helps regulate mood. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, approximately 5% of adults in the U.S. experience Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), with many more experiencing milder forms of seasonal mood changes.

Coalition Highlights

Boone County Alliance had a strong and impactful month, celebrating meaningful progress across prevention, mental health, and community engagement efforts. BCA engaged youth and educated retailers by completing 19 vape shop environmental scans and engaging 60 High School students in conversations about youth-targeted marketing, while also promoting safety at home through the distribution of 87 medication lockboxes to Boone County families. More than 500 individuals and families were supported through mental health outreach, including community events, 988 crisis line education, and family engagement activities that encouraged connection and well-being. In addition, BCA strengthened partnerships through active participation in regional coalitions, built organizational capacity through training, strategic planning, and grant efforts, and expanded its reach through a monthly blog, newsletter and strong social media engagement.

Partner Spotlight

Boone County Alliance is proud to spotlight the NKY Health Substance Use/Tobacco Health Educators for their continued partnership and leadership in tobacco and nicotine prevention across Northern Kentucky. Their team plays a critical role in educating youth, families, and community members about the risks of tobacco and nicotine use, while also supporting policy, environmental, and systems-level strategies that promote healthier communities. Through collaboration on environmental scans, youth education, and community awareness efforts, the NKY Health Tobacco Educators help ensure that prevention messages are accurate, engaging, and rooted in public health best practices. We are grateful for their expertise, commitment, and willingness to partner in protecting youth and creating a healthier future for Boone County.
