First Presbyterian Church of Rome
January 2019
We hope you will join us for this wonderful opportunity to learn more about growing a God-sized vision for your family.
Speaker and author, Rob Rienow of Visionary Family Ministries, will be our guest as he guides us through a weekend full of teaching, addressing the topic of equipping us as husbands, wives, parents, children, and grandparents to follow a Biblical design for faith in the family.
Rob will lead us through a series of sessions related to areas of family life such as marriage, parenting, and grand-parenting in light of the Gospel.

Session 1 - Friday, January 25 (6:30pm - 9:00pm)
"Visionary Marriage"- This session is focusing on the vision God has for marriages, emphasizing a biblical mission and purpose for couples.

Session 2 - Sat. January 26 (9:00am - 12:00pm)
"Visionary Family"- This session is creating a mission and getting the whole family involved in a God-sized vision. Families are encouraged to bring their children (6yrs and older) to the first hour of the session for interactive family discussion. After the children are released to childcare, the morning continues as we dive deeper into biblical parenting, shaping our children's hearts and learning about being the primary disciplers of our children.

Session 3 - Sat. January 26 (1:30pm - 3:00pm)
"Never Too Late" (Grandparenting & Beyond)- This session focuses on grandparents and parents of adult children as we learn it is "Never Too Late" for God to use us in the lives of our children and grandchildren.

Childcare provided during Saturday sessions only for children ages 8 weeks to 12 years. Should this prevent you and your spouse from attending the session on Friday evening, either financially or due to a lack of available childcare, please contact Jonathan Schwartz at

This semester focuses on the NT books of Acts through Revelation. We will be looking at the church, the bride of Christ. It may be difficult to read each of the books in a week's time. It is helpful, however, to skim through the book prior to class. Unless otherwise noted, we will present an overview of the key concepts in each book as they relate to the history of God's plan of salvation. If you are interested in studying the Bible in a structured and systematic way, then this is the class for you! Our Bethel Discipleship community is a diverse group of learners encompassing adults of all ages. To sign up for this semester, please contact Phyllis Pemerton ( or  the Church Office.

Time Well Spent

It's that time of the year once again. The time when we look to the coming year and grasp the possibility of making a real difference. If you are seeking to add something to your life that would reap rewards untold, draw you into a fellowship that truly blesses, and has been God ordained by His very presence, perhaps you will find this weekly time of prayer the perfect fit. One hour a week -1/168% of your time, to meet with others who are praying for our church, the concerns of our congregation and the world. One hour to experience a time of drawing together to glorify and praise our Might God. Is this something the Lord is prompting you to do? If so, meet us in the Prayer Room on Thursday mornings at 9:30. If you have any questions, please contact

"Fighting for Joy in Christ In a
World of Depression and Anxiety"

This year we explore the challenges that we face as we fight to maintain our joy in Christ...within a broken world and within our own brokenness. Just in the last decade, there has been a rapid increase of depression and anxiety. We can all recognize that in a world of grief, stress, disease, and brokenness, we have much to be anxious and depressed about. But as Christians, we have a secure hope that presses us into a deep joy that no present reality can unhinge. The church, therefore, should be the most influential and safe place for anyone suffering with depression and anxiety.
As a church, we will stretch our understanding to the reality of our fallen bodies and minds and rest our hearts in the promises of a God that meets us in the valleys of our depression and anxiety. For the Christian, spiritual joy is a companion to suffering that must be pursued. After all, this is the "already, but not yet."

January 16: "Unstuck: A Nine-Step Journey to Change that Lasts"

Mission Spotlight: Kirsten McClain
 Propempo/OMF (

How does God speak to you? Most of us would say that God speaking to us is rarely as clear as we would like it to be, but Jesus followers know that He speaks! Every single follower of Christ is called to missions, but our roles are slightly different. I would venture to say that we won't see our role clearly defined until we start living out our calling to be involved in missions.
Missions mobilization is to the reached what evangelism is to the unreached. My specific role is to help people understand that, first and foremost, they already have a calling as laid out in the Great Commission and, secondly, to help them ascertain and follow that calling. My calling, to serve in this role, was not clearly defined from the Lord until I began to walk by faith and peel back the layers, revealing one orange wedge of God's plan at a time!
At Propempo International (derived from the Greek word that means "to send forward equipped"), my work involves coming alongside of churches and individuals and helping them to develop a biblical missions ministry and to send missionaries well. In 2019, I will also begin serving churches that have partnered with Overseas Missionary Fellowship (OMF), one of the oldest missionary agencies that is still in existence today. I will provide training and consulting services so that the church can do what it was called to do-fulfill the Great Commission by identifying, training, guiding, sending, and supporting missionaries to the ends of the Earth.
It is a privilege to be supported by my First Pres. Church family, and if you would like to discern your role in missions, please contact me at! If you would like to join my newsletter or my prayer team, I would welcome that as well.
