SAFE RETURN TO SCHOOL:
We encourage all families to get COVID tested, all faculty and staff are doing so this week. Friendly reminders of our morning procedures. We are very excited to welcome our students back to campus. Not only are we focused on the children's safety, but we also have a responsibility to protect our staff from unnecessary exposure.

MLK Holiday 1/18/21

– Dr Martin Luther King
Martin Luther King Jr. was a Baptist minister and civil-rights activist who had a seismic impact on race relations in the United States, beginning in the mid-1950s.
Among his many efforts, King headed the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). Through his activism and inspirational speeches, he played a pivotal role in ending the legal segregation of African-American citizens in the United States, as well as the creation of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
King won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, among several other honors. He continues to be remembered as one of the most influential and inspirational African-American leaders in history.
The Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on Jan. 18, 2021, marks the 26th anniversary of the day of service that celebrates the Civil Rights leader’s life and legacy. MLK Day is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities. * courtesy biography.com
We hope to spark some action or service on any scale (to another individual, on their block, in their neighborhood, for a community outside of their own, something national, something global, or something for the environment, etc.). As in all we do during these times of Covid, the students will have to be creative. There will be no school on January 18th; but this is "a day ON, not a day OFF."

The People's Holiday
A People’s Holiday features six-time Grammy award-winning bassist, composer, and educator Christian McBride in a digital performance inspired by his social justice-focused album entitled, The Movement Revisited: A Musical Portrait of Four Icons. The 45-minute concert of jazz and poetry will feature performances of students from The Julliard School and a poetry reading by the legendary Sonia Sanchez. The concert will conclude with a conversation between McBride and Sanchez moderated by Dwandalyn Reece, Associate Director of Curatorial Affairs. This concert honors Dr. Kings’ commitment to racial quality, justice, and service. "

January 27 is the day for everyone to remember the millions of people killed in the Holocaust, Nazi Persecution and in subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, and Darfur.
This day marks the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp.

Museums of any kind are valuable parts of any society. Supporting the Holocaust Museum with donations helps ensure their important information stays available to all.
Help a Holocaust Survivor
According to The Blue Card, a nonprofit organization for survivors, one-third of the 100,000 survivors in the US live below the poverty line. Any survivor will be elderly and needing help. Give someone a hand and buy them some groceries or fix their fence. Show then the kindness they never knew before.

DAVID LABKOVSKI BRINGS THE STORIES OF SHOLEM ALEICHEM TO LIFE
For artist David Labkovski, reading and illustrating the stories of Yiddish author Sholem Aleichem was a return to his own childhood in Vilna. He illustrated the small, everyday moments of life in the shtetl that Sholem Aleichem captured in his stories. Labkovski wanted to commemorate the Jewish ‘world that was’—not just how the Jewish people died, but how they lived for centuries before the Holocaust.

Over winter break we woke up to the sad news about the passing of a dear member of our community, Debra Williams. This is a time to embrace Janeiro and Candie; it is also a time to carry their hearts and lessen their worries.
As you might know, Candie has had a reduced workload for months and dedicated herself full time to caring for Debra.
Please consider supporting this beloved family of WSSD by giving what is in your means.
For years we have received the cheer, love and care that Miss Candie gives to us everyday; some of us have been blessed to be Janeiro's teachers. We love them and they need to feel this love now more than ever.

Andrew Holets/ Development Director
Mr. Holets has a Master’s degree in nonprofit leadership from the University of San Diego, studied as a Peace Corps Fellows at the Fels Institute of Government at the University of Pennsylvania, and holds a Bachelors of Arts degree in Political Science and Communications from Albright College in Reading, PA. He focuses his career in the community building and nonprofit sector, primarily in executive leadership and fund development, with the past decade serving youth and families in the Mid-City and City Heights communities of San Diego.
He enjoys spending time with his young family, long-distance running, and is a co-founding member of the Balboa Park Night Bikers Club.

Within the collaborative leadership model, the Board of Trustees is responsible for the legal and financial health of the school.
