We honor Dr. King ...
The Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service is a defining moment each year when Americans across the country step up to make our communities more equitable and take action to create the Beloved Community of Dr. King’s dream. While Dr. King believed the Beloved Community was possible, he acknowledged and fought for systemic change. His example is our call to action. Read More

We are happy to announce our High School Open House was in person this year! Many friends (new and old) came out to meet our faculty, view student work, and hear from students/parents, past and present. Thank you to everyone who participated!

Planning on having your child at Waldorf next Fall? Begin your re-enrollment and save $$ by avoiding the $300 late fee. This deadline helps our team plan out operational and curricular capacity, so meeting it is an act of school spirit and support.

Gratitude
Parent Association's Gratitude Project:
The Parent Association expressed its gratitude to faculty and staff just before the Winter break. All faculty, staff, and committee volunteers received a card expressing gratitude for the gift of light they bring to our community. Faculty and staff were treated to a spread of homebaked goodness by Morris Jurca. We hope that you had a restful break, and we continue to be grateful for all that you do.
In the Classroom
Grades Winter Concert!
Thank you Ms. Laurelin, Ms. Rockett, Mr. Mark and students for such a warm and wonderful send-off to Winter Break. It was a treat to have parents back on campus for this musical celebration.
Grade 1
The class learned about Kwanzaa and with the help of Mr. Joaquin and Mr. Sean, the students were able to take home their own "kinara", where the candles represent the light and power of the sun. During this season, they also learned how many different cultures celebrate the "light".
Created in 1966 by Maulana Ron Karenga, Kwanzaa is an African American and Pan-African holiday that celebrates history, values, family, community and culture. The ideas and concepts of Kwanzaa are expressed in the Swahili language, one of the most widely spoken languages in Africa. The seven principles which form its core were drawn from communitarian values found throughout the African continent. These principles are: Umoja (Unity), Kujichagulia (Self-Determination), Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility), Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics), Nia (Purpose), Kuumba (Creativity), and Imani (Faith). Kwanzaa gets its name from the Swahili phrase, “matunda ya kwanza” and is rooted in first fruit celebrations which are found in cultures throughout Africa both in ancient and modern times.
Grade 2
Before the break, Ms. Stussi's class completed their wooden multiplication circles.
Grade 6
The students recently started their archery block.
The whole Waldorf curriculum is designed to work together to bring the children the right amount of mental work combined with the right amount of physical work to harmonize the inner and outer forces working on the human being. Class teachers work to create lessons that will arouse the children’s interest and intellectual curiosity. This is the mental work. Handwork, Woodwork, Games, and Eurythmy teachers work to bring the children purposeful movement activity. This provides the physical work. Music and Foreign Language classes go back and forth between physical and mental work in a harmonious weaving. Together we strive to accomplish the goal of assisting the children to develop themselves into whole human beings full of intellectual and physical capacities as well as compassion for all of humanity.
Grade 7
Mr. Carlos and some of the students had the opportunity to share a tapas meal (and practice their Spanish) at a local restaurant, Costa Brava SD.
World languages are an integral part of the curriculum in Waldorf schools. The purpose of language study is to develop the ability to communicate, raise one’s social conscience, and cultivate an interest in others.
Big Congrats to our Middle School Flag Football team for making it to the Championships!!

In other sports news...
After a year off, we're excited to announce that GIRLS' MIDDLE SCHOOL BASKETBALL is back this School Year!!!
Practice will be at the High School every Monday and Wednesday at 3:30, starting Monday, January 24th. All Middle School girls are welcome to join.
Be sure to join the Afterschool Sports Google Classroom to gain access to forms, schedules and announcements.
9th Grade
The 9th Grade students went to the Antique Gas & Steam Engine Museum to learn about the art of Blacksmithing. The students got hands-on experience learning how to work with a coal forge to heat and bend metal.
“Children who learn while they are young to make practical things by hand in an artistic way, and for the benefit of others as well as for themselves, will not be strangers to life or to other people when they are older. They will be able to form their lives and their relationships in a social and artistic way, so that their lives are thereby enriched. Out of their hands can come technicians and artists who will know how to solve the problems and tasks set us.”
-Rudolf Steiner

Scrip Doctor is In!
Are you reaching your full scrip potential?

How it works:
Our families buy virtual and physical gift cards online at www.ShopWithScrip.com or on the RaiseRight App on their smartphones, or through the WSSD school store, The Snake & Lily to use in place of cash, checks, or credit cards for their regular everyday shopping. The Snake & Lily buys the gift cards from Great Lakes Scrip Center at a reduced cost to sell at full face value. The difference is immediate fundraising for our school!

Stay the course my friends, scrip can be a lot of fun and provide huge funds for the school, your class trips and even tuition credit! For more details, contact Liza Ferraro 619-318-8460 [email protected]

Online or Outdoor Tutor
My name is Donovan Wilcox and I am an 11th grade student at WSSD. I know from personal experience how difficult homework can be, and how much easier it becomes when you have someone to work with who can provide support, motivation, and encouragement. I am currently available for hire as a homework tutor for 5th-10th grade students. I am available most afternoons of the week and my rate is flexible. All proceeds will go towards my class' 11th grade service trip this Spring. I would be able to help your student with homework, classwork, and academic assistance of any sort. I am equally eager to help with math, writing, and/or reading assignments. Please reach out to me if you are interested. I am available on zoom or in a Covid-safe setting. I can be reached at [email protected] or at (619) 597-3573.

The Waldorf School of San Diego earned a Niche grade of A for 2021!

Only 10% of schools across the U.S. receive an A or higher, so this is a huge accomplishment for us! Waldorf School of San Diego also ranked #20 in Best High Schools for the Arts in CA.
