RESEARCH TIPS

Don't Pay for Articles on Google Scholar!

Google Scholar is a great place to scan a lot of sources at once, but it doesn't always know when you have the ability to access articles and other sources from a library. Clicking on an article may take you to a page prompting you to pay for access to it.

As an RHEC Library patron, you have the right to access millions of journal articles for free! With a few adjustments to your preferences, you can configure Google Scholar to automatically show and direct you to resources the library owns.

Step 1: To connect Google Scholar to the RHEC Library’s collection, navigate to scholar.google.com. Go to the Settings link in the top-left corner of the page.

Step 2: Locate the gear icon.

Step 3: On the Google Scholar settings page, choose Library links.

Step 4: If you're on campus and connected to the RHEC network, the RHEC Library should already be selected as an option. If not, search for RHEC in the search box.

You may choose up to five libraries. If you are a student, staff, or faculty at JMU, Radford University, Roanoke College, VCU, VSU, Virginia Tech, or Virginia Western, you may also search for and add their libraries!

Now, when you perform a search, results available through the library will look like this. Click the "View it @ RHEC Library" link to access the full text of the article!

If you’re on campus and connected to the RHEC network, you can access the resource immediately. If you are not on campus, you will need to provide your RHEC Library card number.
