Pastor Berg's Message

2017 – A New Year

Many of my friends are calling 2016 "The worst year ever!" Maybe a bit of an overstatement. Most of them are saying this as yet another popular person died. Wham! lead singer George Michael, Star Wars hero Carrie Fisher, not to forget Alan Rickman or Prince and our little buddy Bob Denver. So, many!

Yet, others, more humble, have died this year as well. They will die with no fanfare from the media. No "shoutout" from fawning fans on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.

February 12th:  2016 Annual Youth Auction        3:45 – 7 PM
Supporting the FLC youth ministries, this year will have a Disney theme to celebrate our youth traveling to Thousand Oaks, California for the Western States Youth Gathering this summer.

For over l00 years, Altar Guild, Ladies Aide (aka WELCA), Men's Brotherhood, and many other faithful lay members have been an integral part of our church activities.  They raised money, hosted countless activities, set up for communion, provided church flowers, recorded baptisms, helped with weddings—countless activities for our First Lutheran Church families.   To safeguard our story of serving Bothell the library committee has inventoried the meeting minutes, documents, and notebooks.

During January and February 2017, we are asking you to help preserve the historical documents from 1909 to the early 1950's. We will be transferring the pages of these notebooks into digital format, and protect the documents in special conservation boxes.

We need volunteers to contribute one to two hours January 11th or 25th. (February hours to be determined later),   We will be scanning the document pages and saving them digitally both on a hard drive and in the cloud.

What would you be doing? You will carefully place pages of the historical document on the scanner, push the button, and turn the pages.  Not difficult, but very important!

January 11,10:00-2:00  and January 25th, 10:00 - 2:00: Please sign up on the sheets posted on the library window.

Big hearts this Christmas

Thanks to the many generous folks at church this year, we were able to stock the Hopelink Christmas store with 205 awesome gifts and $175.00 in gift cards.  Hopelink provides gifts to all their clients each Christmas season, and without the help of generous people in and around our community, there would be no gifts.

FLC members also provided the gifts that were requested from our Compass Housing Alliance Easternwood apartment here in Bothell.

There are many things to be thankful for during this holiday season.

We thank you,

Your Social Ministry Committee

Too

“Too” is an adverb meaning – 1: in addition, 2: more than enough, 3: to a regrettable extent, 4: extremely or too much or too many.

It doesn’t seem like much of a word, but it will provide a key this year to exploring the heights of God’s grace and the depths of our human struggle to live with each other.

Let’s try it out with definition 4, “extremely.” “That was too funny!” It makes no sense literally, but if we understand the idiom we discover that someone finds something very humorous. As a matter of fact, it was so funny there may not have been words to describe it.

We are eavesdropping on a private moment between two people and there is a positive relationship implied here. The “too” carries a sense of intimacy and sharing.

The words “God is too gracious and forgiving!” is not criticizing God's generosity, but recognizing God’s extreme love for people. In this positive relationship, God's very essence has flowed through and to someone and they are expressing awe and gratitude.

Try it out for yourself. Use the “too” word once a day with definition 4 (until family and friends get tired of it). See how this little word might expand your experience of what is large in God’s universe and of what might be enlarged between you and the people around you.

Your copy should address 3 key questions: Who am I writing for? (Audience) Why should they care? (Benefit) What do I want them to do here? (Call-to-Action).

Create a great offer by adding words like "free" "personalized" "complimentary" or "customized." A sense of urgency often helps readers take an action, so think about inserting phrases like "for a limited time only" or "only 7 remaining!"
