January Newsletter
Sculptures in the Snow
Dear Friends of the Arts,
Here's to a new year and to new opportunities. For the Galena Center for the Arts, 2023 marks our tenth anniversary! We plan to celebrate in numerous ways all year long. Looking at the statistics for new business survival, and especially for new non-profit survival, many don't make it for five years, and especially during the last very difficult years of Covid, many have failed. We are so grateful for all the support and encouragement we have received, and look forward to a wonderful future for the Arts in Galena.

Please, get involved at the Center. Usher for a show, help find props or costumes, or be in one! Staff the gallery. Make art. Make music. Deliver posters. Take a class, or teach one! Share ideas for art shows, suggestions for plays we can produce. Join a committee to help steer us in the best directions. Share ideas to make the Center more valuable to you. Call me with ideas, or to get connected with a project. 815-402-3111. I'm not always at that office number, but I will return your call.
Wishing you a rewarding art-filled New Year.

Cheers!

Carole
Progress Report
In January, we plan to expand our present gallery space by adding a new Special Exhibit Gallery. To do this, we need to tear out all the remaining teller booths in the upstairs of the building, and add a partial wall to separate it from the Regional Artists Galley. Renovation always seems so simple on the plans ... just tear out a door here and put in a wall, and extend this wall here, and cut off that wall there... and plaster and sand and finish and prime and paint and carpet and .... well, we have our work cut out for us. We plan to have it finished so you can enjoy it starting with our Jan. 27 opening!
The Center's Winter Hours
The galleries will be closed for construction until our art opening on Jan. 27. However, we will be open in the performance space for the events listed below.

Once we re-open, our hours will be Thursday-Sunday, 1-4 pm.
In Memoriam
Tom Cunningham
(1949 – 2022)

We will miss our friend and artist, Tom Cunningham.

A renaissance man, Tom was a very capable city planner, attorney, artist and writer.

Tom moved to the Galena area in 2010, where he developed skills in prairie and savanna restoration, and was inspired to paint beautiful scenes of Jo Daviess County.

We hope to host a retrospective exhibit of his artwork this year.

There will be a gathering celebrating Tom’s life from 3-5 pm on Jan. 28 at the Galena Territory Owners Club.

Main and Special Exhibit Galleries
Although our gallery spaces will be closed for the first few weeks of January due to renovations, the upcoming exhibits will bring it back to life with the Opening Reception planned for January 27 from 5-7pm. The main gallery will celebrate the beginning of 2023 with its New Year, New Art exhibit. And the special exhibit space, open for the first time, will house an exhibit themed Color It Neutral. We look forward to seeing you there!

Both exhibits will be up through the end of February. Since the time of this exhibit is shorter than usual, make plans to visit soon so as not to miss the shows.

Galena Center for the Arts
The Center is collaborating with the Galena Public Library, hosting one of their LitFest events.

Stormy Stipe, Ph.D (UW Platteville) will teach a workshop about writing the personal essay, in particular the epistolary essay referencing the works of James Baldwin and Ta Nehisi Coates, and also work with participants on broaching difficult topics, ones that challenge us and maybe even frighten us a little, like racial bias.

Galena LitFest is an annual literary festival organized by the Galena Public Library with generous support from the Friends of the Galena Public Library.

"Walking the Camino
our Way"
The Camino de Santiago (the Way of St. James) is a large network of ancient pilgrim routes stretching across Europe and coming together at the tomb of St. James (Santiago in Spanish) in Santiago de Compostela in north-west Spain. Yearly, hundreds of thousands of people of various backgrounds seek the incredible opportunity to disconnect and experience a slower daily life with few modern interruptions, as they walk the Camino.

Join local friends Bonnielynn Kreiser, Maureen Bardusk, and Susan Barg as they share photos and stories of their 486 mile, 34 day pilgrimage from the Pyrenees in France to the cathedral in Santiago, Spain.
