December Blog Post - Coming Face-to-Face with Abstraction in Hartwood Acres Park
Our December blog post was written by University of Pittsburgh History of Art and Architecture student, Layne Shaffer. Layne was an intern in 2023 with the Office for Public Art's Education and Outreach Program that studied the history of both the Sculpture Garden in Hartwood Acres Park and the artists who created each sculpture. Read our December blog postto learn more about the Sculptures and Layne's experience!
Project Updates
Deer Lakes Ecological Assessment and Action Plan is Funded!
We are thrilled to announce that funding has been secured for the Ecological Assessment and Action Plan in Deer Lakes Park by The Caroline Fredricka Holdship Charitable Trust and FedEx Ground. The Parks Foundation will work with the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy to complete the Assessment and Action Plan. These comprehensive studies evaluate each park's natural resources and ecological assets and recommend an implementation plan for improving the environment of the park. This is the eighth county park to have this comprehensive study done and we are working to secure the funding for the ninth and final park.
Community Meetings to Provide Feedback for the
Trail Connection between
South Park and White Oak Park
In spring of 2023 we hosted three in-person meetings and conducted an online survey for community feedback on the proposed trail connection between South Park and White Oak Park. In 2024, we will host three more community meetings to share the results of the survey data and provide a final opportunity for feedback on the trail connection.
In 2023, the Observation Tower in North Park was publicly bid by Allegheny County for construction. Unfortunately, all bids were overbudget and construction was unable to begin as planned. Currently, the Parks Foundation is fundraising to secure the additional money needed to complete construction. After funding is secured, the project will be re-bid for construction. Learn more about the Observation Tower on our website.
