Spur Cross Ranch: A Gift to the Future

After nerve wracking and delicate negotiations, a deal was in hand. Maricopa County and the state of Arizona were in. Now it was up to a population of fewer than 4,000 to kick in the final 1/3 by voting to tax themselves and raise $6,000,000.

Twenty-five years have passed since the overwhelming turnout and "yes" vote by Cave Creek’s citizens created the Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area.

In a David and Goliath story, the former dude ranch had been destined for development, with golf courses and enough homes to quadruple the town’s population, overrun the quiet town’s streets, and change forever Cave Creek’s character.

A groundswell of opposition grew with understanding of the project’s impact. The property’s year-round water sources supplied wells. Ancient people took advantage of the water sources and left a rich record of their lives in petroglyphs, dwellings and rock alignments. The “Jewel of the Creek,” one of only nine riparian areas in the state, along with the creek, would be threatened by future runoff from golf courses, landscaping and lawns. Overall, the raw unmatched beauty of the area would be restricted to all but a favored few.

The tireless efforts of many drew support from local and state officials, as well as the influence of Senator John McCain, resulting in an agreement to purchase the land with Maricopa Parks Department overseeing it.

As a result of the foresight and courage of the supporters and voters, any and all can now hike, enjoy magnificent vistas, or rest in solitude and beauty.

January 2001 saw the opening of Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area. Look north and marvel at the achievement to preserve this beautiful expanse of land.

January 31, 2026 @ 2:00 - 4:00 pm

If the boulders at The Boulders aren’t really boulders, what are they? Why is Black Mountain black – and why do saguaros grow mostly on the west slope? What kind of precious minerals lurk under the earth for which prospectors flocked to our region? Let Stephanie guide you through the mystery that is Black Mountain.

Hello to all from the Museum Board of Directors.

We are looking forward to a very prosperous year for your museum. As you may know, plans are well underway for the Miners Dinner, our big fundraiser of the year. The planning for the event is being led by our good friend Linda Vareha, but many additional thanks to all our volunteers who are actively helping to create a great event – see you at Harolds on March 10!

I also want to thank the group of folks who are generally hidden in plain sight, our “Dream Team.” This group, led by Pete Peterson, creates an interesting event for our visitors twice a month – the Arizona Gold Mining Experience, but just as importantly, this group of people keeps the Museum’s buildings and grounds in top shape. Hats off to them!

Finally, with the New Year, we are looking toward the end of our fiscal year when we hold our Annual Meeting to elect and re-elect members of the Board of Directors. Please contact the Museum Executive Director, Jo Ann Stuckey, if you would like to learn more about serving on the Board.

See you at the Museum!

Pat O'Brien

Dear Friends,

You may have already toasted the new year, opened your new calendar, and welcomed 2026 into your lives but I want to add my own greeting: Here is to a healthy, happy and hopefully history making new year!

History is made every day, day by day. We can’t wait to see what the next 365 days will add to the story of our desert foothills community.

Here at our museum, we are enthusiastically optimistic about the future. If 2025 is an indicator our year will continue to see increases in adult and family engagement with Cave Creek Museum. Our exceptional Education Committee, all retired professional educators, put their experience into creating new and innovative experiential programs to ignite a love of history into our local school children.

Last year we added a new program targeted to three-to-five-year old’s, Preschool Pioneers. This group of young children is often overlooked in terms of educational development programming and opportunities. It is through the generosity and foresight of Kiwanis Club of Carefree that our museum is instilling the importance of understanding where we come from in the lives of our future decision makers.

Be sure to check out the newly launched Kiwanis sponsored Passport to History. It’s a fun and instructional gallery guide for young students and their accompanying adults. It’s a treasure map of what lies in store throughout our galleries and museum campus.

With continued visionary community support and instructive hands-on learning programs, we believe our “living” history museum has a bright future.

This year our history museum is making a little history of our own! Our annual fundraiser, Miners Dinner, is pulling up stakes and moving to Harold’s Cave Creek Corral. Mark your newly opened 2026 calendars for March 10, 4:30 – 7:00 pm. We are staking a new claim with a new location and other newly mined surprises. We hope to see you there.

Cave Creek Museum looks forward to your continued presence in our future!
