CDO Workforce Youth Success!
In 2009, “E” came to the CDO Workforce Career Center in Norwich as a 19-year-old high school drop out with an infant daughter. He enrolled in the Out-of-School Youth Program and completed all four component exams to earn his General Equivalency Diploma within six months of enrollment. His initial goal was to work as an auto mechanic or welder.
During career exploration with his Youth Counselor, he scored high in protective services, and “E” thought he would like to pursue a career in law enforcement. After “E” successfully participated in the Youth Leadership class, he completed a Work Experience with the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office, and soon after enrolled in SUNY Morrisville’s Norwich Campus for criminal justice. Due to transportation and childcare issues, “E” dropped out of college before the end of his first semester. After this, “E” worked to support his family through a job with Staffworks.
In September 2011, during Youth Program follow-up services, he was referred to openings at Unison by his Counselor. “E” updated his resume and applied for multiple positions. Shortly thereafter, he was hired at Unison as an Assembler/Tester.
Fast forward to 2022. “E” again came to the Norwich Career Center, this time for help with his resume. He had been employed with Unison since 2011, starting out as an Assembler/Tester and working his way up to Quality Inspector 2, then 3, and then to the position of Quality Inspector 4. “E” stated that he wanted to advance his career in aviation electronics inspection, and was aware the Career Center was holding an upcoming Recruitment Event with Amphenol Aerospace that he was interested in attending.
After staff helped update “E’s” resume, he attended the recruitment event, was asked for a second interview, and was soon hired as a Quality Insurance Technician, First Article Inspection at Amphenol Aerospace.
Congratulations “E”! Thanks for coming to a CDO Workforce Center to allow us to help you along your career path, from high school drop to Quality Insurance Technician!

Businesses: New York College Apprenticeship Network (NYCAN) Grant Can Help You Upskill Your Workforce
The Workforce Development Board of Herkimer, Madison & Oneida (WDB/HMO) has partnered with the NYCAN (NY College Apprenticeship Network) grant to reimburse on-the-job training costs for advanced manufacturing companies that have less than 50 employees and a registered apprentice program.
Wages can be reimbursed at 50% up to $25 an hour for six months of on-the-job training (OJT) with minimum paperwork.
The undirected funding provides many benefits for small to medium-sized manufacturing companies and ensures the apprentice is trained in accordance with the company’s standards and procedures.
If you would like to know how your company can take advantage of this funding or know of a company that would benefit, please contact Meghan McBennett at mmcbennett@working-solutions.org.
