President's Letter

Welcome to 2026!

If you are in Sydney or London, you might celebrate with a spectacular fireworks show.  In Spain or Mexico, you would eat 12 grapes at midnight for 12 months of good luck. The Irish bang pots and pans to scare off bad spirits.  In Japan, you might eat a long noodle for longevity.  If you are in the US, you probably watch the ball drop in NYC.  The way we celebrate might not be the same, but the sentiment is universal; each of us is embarking on  a new year.  The new year brings with it the opportunity to mend relationships, capture moments with the ones we love, celebrate friendships, and do better with the knowledge from the year before.

At the Art Docent, we are in full swing! Print presentations have already started for January.  This might be the 1st year since I’ve been a docent that we have ALL JANUARY CLASSES FILLED before Marsha even got back into the office!  Huge thank you to our new docents for jumping in and making your presence known.  We are so appreciative to have you on board and I can already see the positive impact you will make on the organization.  Thank you for your dedication through training and I look forward to seeing you around the schools.

Next on the horizon is our annual Art Show!  The Fisher “museum” will be open April 27-May 1, a bit earlier this year than last.  Look for setup in the office and initial meetings to start in February.  We’ve also got some great Continuing Education events coming up with movie nights, yoga/art retreat in Santa Cruz, and museum visits.  Let’s keep the energy ramped up for workshops, remembering that the scheduling takes us all the way to the very end of the school year.

Volunteer Highlight

As part of the Sunshine/Appreciation Committee’s Mission In 2025-26 we are going to show recognition for the contribution of docents each month with a write-up in the Palette Newsletter.

This month, the Sunshine Committee is pleased to recognize not just one individual, but our entire new graduating class. Every trainee class brings something unique to the Art Docents, and this tight-knit group has been a truly wonderful addition to our docent family. We so enjoyed our Thursday training sessions in the office, where their enthusiasm, energy, and thoughtful engagement made each week something to look forward to. This class graduated in December and immediately jumped in, beginning to teach in January and covering the bulk of our January and February classes with confidence and dedication. Beyond the classroom, they have joined committees, shared their talents, and built strong friendships along the way. They are a true testament to what the Art Docents stand for—not only teaching our LGUSD students, but also fostering community and meaningful connections. We value each of you and are so grateful to have you as part of the Art Docent family.

Manet & Morisot

October 11- March 1st, 2026

This is the first major exhibition dedicated to the artistic exchange between French Impressionists Édouard Manet (1832–1883) and Berthe Morisot (1841–1895). Manet was the era’s great pioneer of modern painting, and Morisot, the only woman to exhibit under her own name in the original Impressionist group. Unfolding over a period of 15 years (1868–1883), this exhibition traces the evolution of a friendship between two groundbreaking artists. The story of their relationship has often been told through Manet’s early portraits of Morisot, with Morisot’s own work treated as an offshoot of Manet’s. Recent scholarship reveals that, by the final years of his life, Manet increasingly followed Morisot’s example — her choice of subjects and colors, and even her rapid, fluttering brushstrokes. Rich in new research, the exhibition recasts this celebrated artistic friendship — and, by extension, the story of modern art — in a fresh light.
