Aging in place or Universal Design is a growing focus in the realm of home remodeling, as individuals seek to make their homes suitable for long-term living. With today’s current economy more people are realizing they will be in their home longer than originally thought. Every home can be converted for aging in place, with some being more suitable than others. Let’s explore the various aspects of aging-in-place modifications and the importance of thoughtful planning for the future. It doesn’t matter your current age. You never know when some of these elements can make life easier (i.e. broken leg, knee surgery, hip surgery, bad back, etc.).

A Modern In-Law Suite

This home’s lower level got an upgrade with an in-law suite that will provide comfortable living year round. Removing doors, existing built-ins, and opening closets provided needed flow to the space—and new windows and recessed lights brightened up the area. A bar area transformed into a spacious kitchenette with a new island adding a Black Summit Induction Cooktop on Viatera Saprano Quartz countertop, complementing Dura Supreme cabinets that host spacious and well organized drawers that would make any cook happy. To top it off, a beautiful stainless-steel Farmhouse sink and all new Smart Caseta switches modernize the space.

This suite doesn’t stop there—the bedroom closet increases storage and functionality with a custom closet system. A sliding barn door closes off the staircase to give privacy and adds contrast to the design. Then, step outside to a new screened-in porch with a ceiling fan to enjoy the outdoors.

Grip+ is an advanced, innovative treatment that guarantees slip resistance on Dekton ultracompact surfaces, providing maximum safety for both public and residential projects. Dekton Grip+ offers a smoothness that’s similar to the material’s standard finishing, thus ensuring the same pleasant feel when walking across it barefoot.

The Grip+ anti-slip technology provides Dekton surfaces with a higher safety index and helps avoid potential accidents. This new benefit joins the existing long list of excellent properties that define the revolutionary Dekton surface by Cosentino. Thanks to its innovative manufacturing process, Dekton offers advanced resistance to scratches, stains, freeze/thaw, heat and UV rays. It also absorbs very little water.

Traditional kitchen design does not generally accommodate people with accessibility issues. Here, a microwave is placed in the base cabinetry of an island. Having the microwave reside in a base cabinet makes an easier job of maneuvering hot food/liquid items. Other smaller appliances can be tucked under the counters and crafted as part of the cabinetry.
