PLUMA SNIPPETS January 2023

Treat, Trip, Thrilling Adventure

I met Karen Drucker twenty years ago when she entertained and inspired a group of women at a spiritual retreat I hosted along with two other ministers in Flagstaff, Arizona. Reverends Michelle Medrano and Michele Whittington and I organized and presented weekend long retreats for several years in northern Arizona. Karen was our favorite singer, entertainer for our gatherings.

Karen is a keynote speaker, retreat facilitator, singer, songwriter, and author.  She has produced twenty CD’s and written her book, Let go of the Shore, and performed throughout the country inspiring others with her songs and powerful message; live a life worth living. Once you hear Karen sing and perform, you will never forget her message…live a life worth living.           www.karendrucker.com

On a side note, for those who would remember two celebrity women; as a teenager Karen became the babysitter for Singer/songwriter Carole King.  A connection that certainly inspired Karen to pursue her own music career.

While still a teenager with braces and acne, Karen attended the taping of the Carol Burnett show every Friday. On one of those Fridays, from the audience she challenged Carol Burnett to a Tarzan call contest. Carol was famous for impersonating a loud, wide-mouthed call of Tarzan while swinging from tree to tree in the jungle. During most shows, Carol would indulge her audience with the Tarzan call. Anyway, Karen challenged Carol, came up on stage and gave her best Karen Tarzan call. Carol called the contest, making Karen the winner.

Over the years I have followed Karen through her monthly newsletter. Recently she wrote a piece on attending a conference at Unity Village in Kansas City, Missouri for songwriters, where Rev Paulette Pipe shared a ritual, she commits to monthly—The Three T’s. Rev. Pipe would either TREAT herself to something special, take a TRIP somewhere, or have a THRILLING adventure. This idea of The Three T’s planted a seed in Karen to grow within herself.

After reading Karen’s newsletter on The Three T’s, I thought to myself what a fun and conscious way to begin a New Year! The Three T’s can be metaphorical to selfcare or positive changes, resolutions or an awareness of our time and space allocation in the coming year, month by month. And who doesn’t want to have more fun and new optimistic adventures in the coming year!

What TREAT, TRIP or THRILLING adventure can we align with in the coming year; one month at a time? What TREAT or simple pleasure can we give ourselves instead of waiting for someone else to give it to us? Peace of mind to begin with. Letting go of someone else’s life worries and living our best life ever. As our client John expounded in the salon; 2022 was all about YOU! 2023 is all about ME! LOL, he was joking….but I thought I would add this anyway.

How about a TRIP? Those who enjoy international travel know too well what a treat and thrilling adventure traveling can be. Perhaps enjoying the adventure of travel instead of dreading or complaining about the flight, time, inconvenience of post pandemic changes, etc. As our client Donna proposed at the salon as well; decide who’s driving your life bus this coming year and take the wheel in your hands!  YES! I do hear what my clients are saying!

Of course, a THRILLING adventure can be as simple as changing up your daily routine this coming year. Get involved in your community and dare to take a risk with new people. Consider it a thrilling adventure instead of an annoyance.  Who knows, you might like the change instead of being worried about it. Let’s not become old fuddy-duddies as we age.

No matter what path you choose to take in welcoming the new year…. commit to a life worth living. Consider a monthly TREAT, TRIP or THRILLING adventure. Happy people draw other happy people to them. Put on a smile and embrace a new year. Happy New Year!

With love,

Hilda

Escaping the Dementia Diagnosis – by Amy Denney

I discovered a fascinating article by Amy Denney, an award-winning journalist, certified Holy Yoga and Light Therapy specialist.  The article confirms that Dementia is on the rise among younger adults. “The number diagnosed with these conditions increased by 373 % among 30-to-44-year-olds, 311 % among 45- to 54-year-olds, and 143 % among 55-to-64-year-olds, from 2013 to 2017.”

At the end of the article, Amy Denney has Diet Tips for Dementia, for daily eating and to stay sharp naturally she suggests:

Vegetables, especially leafy greens, and crucifers such as broccoli, cauliflower,

cabbage and brussels sprouts.

Berries, especially blueberries.

Generous servings of pesticide-free, organic vegetables and fruit.

Protein and high omega-3 fats such as avocados, flaxseed, hemp seeds, chia seeds, pumpkin seeds, walnuts, SMASH fish (salmon, mackerel, anchovies, sardines, herring), spirulina.

Sufficient water, at least half your weight in ounces.

Vitamin and mineral supplements that are unique to your deficiencies.

What to avoid:

Processed foods

Baked goods, rice and pasta, or anything made with white, refined flour.

Refined sugars, such as corn syrup and high-fructose corn syrup, sucrose, and glucose.

Fruit juice concentrate.

Sweetened beverages.

Candy.

Grains (or at least minimize them)

Great way to start the new year!
