Wildlife Feature

Although 2021 has come and gone, the memories made in summertime will last forever. Campers not only got to encounter God’s creation in new ways, but also found joy in it.

A favorite activity for many campers was frog catching. Armed with buckets and nets the kids sought out varying species of frogs found at Sugar Creek. While we do not know the exact number of species on camp, Wisconsin has 12 native species of frog.

One group of Seekers campers were especially fond of our amphibian friends. They spent hours each day catching and releasing as many frogs as they could! One of those campers, Haylee Barnhardt, captured these creatures beautifully as seen in these featured photos.

Now, as the seasons have changed and it has gotten colder, these beloved creatures have found safe homes for the winter nestled in mud, on the bottom of the camp's lake. Species like the green frog, the bull frog and the leopard frog need permanent bodies of water to winter in; such as deep marshes, large ponds or lakes. Others such as the gray tree frog take refuge deep in the trees. These frogs live between 2-10 years depending on the species.

We may not be able to see our cold-blooded pals during the winter, but we know they are safe until spring. For campers at Sugar Creek, that means many of the comical, amazing creatures we met this year will be back each summer for years to come. Written by Cecilia Hook; Photo-Haylee Barnhardt
